The kapok tree is also known as the Chinese cotton tree. In the Central Highlands, the kapok tree is also known as the Po-lang tree. In early March, walking along the Thu Bon River from Phuong Ranh Pass (Nong Son District) to Hon Kem - Da Dung (bordering Nong Son and Hiep Duc District), it is not difficult to see kapok trees blooming bright red in a corner of the sky of Quang Nam.
Unlike the kapok trees in the North, the kapok trees in Quang Nam grow singly. Up to now, the kapok trees that still exist are quite old. The kapok flowers only bloom once at the end of spring. This is also the moment that signals the end of the cold. That is why there is a saying "When March comes, the kapok flowers fall down and the old woman puts away her blanket".
