In 2023, a blind date incident caused a stir on Chinese social media. After a failed date, a man got into a messy legal battle with the girl he was introduced to.

It is understood that Mr. Liu found his date, Ms. Zhang, through a matchmaker and arranged to meet the woman at a famous restaurant in Jilin province.

To Liu’s surprise, Zhang arrived at the restaurant with 23 relatives. The people who had “dated” them sat at the table eating and chatting, which surprised Liu greatly.

This date was of course very expensive. The restaurant staff later informed Liu that the girl's family had ordered a significant amount of expensive cigarettes and high-end alcoholic beverages.

When Liu was handed the bill, which came to nearly 20,000 yuan (about 70 million VND), he decided to quickly leave the restaurant and asked Zhang and her relatives to pay the bill. Although Zhang paid the bill, she still asked Liu to contribute at least half of the amount.

Liu only agreed to refund a small portion of the total cost of 4,000 yuan (about 14 million VND), and forced Zhang to ask her relatives to pay their share of the total bill.

Angered by Liu's offer, Zhang's family decided to take the matter to court, filing a lawsuit against Liu to force him to pay.

However, the court ruled in Liu's favor, stating that he was only obligated to pay the cost of his meal and Zhang's 1,400 yuan (about 4.9 million VND).

After the bizarre lawsuit was reported by the media, netizens had many indignant reactions. The incident sparked debates about blind date etiquette, and many sided with Liu.

Legal experts argued that the presence of 23 relatives on the date was considered to be far beyond generally accepted standards. Many also asserted that the other individuals present should have paid for their own meals and not just “eat for free” in such an unreasonable manner.
