Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quy Thanh - Principal of University of Education
Up to this point, when most universities nationwide have announced the 2025 benchmark scores, many occupations have benchmark scores ranging from 29.5 to the absolute score of 30/30.
The two teacher training majors, English Pedagogy and Chinese Pedagogy at the University of Foreign Languages (Vietnam National University, Hanoi ) and Hue University, both have a standard score of 30/30.
Similarly, the admission score to the University of Education - Vietnam National University, Hanoi recorded a record high. The admission score for History - Geography Pedagogy is 29.84.
In 2025, the University of Education - Vietnam National University, Hanoi will enroll 10 teacher training majors with high benchmark scores from over 25 to nearly 30 points. Of which, the two majors of Natural Science Education (benchmark score 25.58) and History - Geography Education (benchmark score 29.84) are the first two majors opened in the country to provide teachers of integrated subjects at secondary school level.
Explaining why the benchmark scores for the education pedagogy industry have been sky-high in recent years, Professor Dr. Nguyen Quy Thanh - Principal of the University of Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said there are many reasons.
The first reason, according to Professor Thanh, is that the implementation of support for living expenses and tuition fees for pedagogical students according to Decree 116/2020/ND-CP has helped pedagogical students feel secure when studying. The living expense support level of 3.63 million/month also meets their basic needs.
Second, the discussion and approval of the Party's policy and the State's policy that "teachers' salaries are ranked highest in the administrative career salary scale system" creates a positive effect on the "teaching profession" and creates great interest from families of children taking the exam this year.
“Obviously, studying pedagogical/education majors that are subsidized by the State and graduating and working with the highest salary on the administrative career salary scale are two factors that strongly influence candidates' decisions on choosing a major or career,” emphasized Professor Thanh.
The third reason, according to Professor Thanh, is that the quota for teacher training programs from 2021 is determined based on the needs and orders of provinces and cities. However, for many reasons, the number of teachers "ordered" by provinces and cities based on "recruitment" needs is only about 70% of the quota compared to the years before Decree 116 (when the quota was calculated based on teacher needs according to classroom standards).
This leads to the paradox that the number of applications for teacher training programs has increased sharply, but the quotas for these programs are controlled by regulations. The quotas for teacher training programs are assigned by the Ministry of Education and Training to schools (because they are related to the budget), while for other programs, schools can determine their own enrollment quotas based on their capacity and quality assurance conditions.
In particular, the large number of candidates registering for a low quota leads to a very high competition ratio. For example, at the University of Education - Hanoi National University, there are many majors with a competition ratio of 1 to 100, even 1 to 200.
In addition, teacher training majors must have a quality assurance threshold (floor score) as prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training. Regardless of the method of admission, it must be converted and complied with. This year, except for some pedagogical majors in special subjects such as art and physical education, which are slightly lower, the remaining candidates who want to apply for pedagogical and education majors must achieve above the "floor score" - that is, 19/30 points or more to pass the "parking round". This floor score has eliminated all candidates with low scores, leaving only those with high scores to compete with each other.
Finally, according to Professor Thanh, there is a policy of adding points (priority for candidates, bonus points for students with excellent student awards, high IELTS scores...). However, according to the admission regulations, bonus points cannot exceed 10% (ie 3 points) and even though there are many types of priority points and bonus points, the total points are added according to the deduction principle so that the total score for consideration does not exceed 30. That is, the highest admission score (including exam scores, bonus points, and priority points is only 30).
