Video of medical staff being assaulted at hospital - Photo: Cut from clip
On the evening of May 6, a short clip appeared on social media recording the image of a patient's family member assaulting a medical staff member. The incident was determined to have occurred on May 4 at Nam Dinh General Hospital.
According to the clip, a man in a black shirt punched the medical staff member repeatedly in the head and face. In the face of the attack, the man in a white shirt could only hold his face and endure the pain, not fighting back.
While the incident occurred, other medical staff were still trying to treat the patient. The incident only stopped when an elderly woman standing nearby intervened.
On the afternoon of May 7, information from the Nam Dinh Province Department of Health said that the medical staff member who was assaulted was a male nurse named NVH, working in the general surgery department. He was scolded and beaten in the head and face by the patient's son, the cause of the conflict is unknown.
According to the provincial hospital's report, from April 25, Mr. NVK (68 years old) - a relative of the young man who assaulted the nurse - came to the emergency room at Xuan Truong District Medical Center in a state of acute pancreatitis, gastrointestinal bleeding, cirrhosis, diabetes, and kidney failure.
His condition did not improve, so he was transferred to the Department of Gastroenterology, Nam Dinh Provincial General Hospital.
Doctors prescribed IV fluids, antibiotics, probiotics, liver cell protection, and transferred the patient to the surgical department for treatment. Here, the patient continued to receive fluid replacement, antibiotics, and pain relief for 7 days.
At 2:30 p.m. on April 30, the patient continued to be examined, consulted, and closely monitored.
On the morning of May 4, the patient was very tired and had difficulty breathing. The doctor checked, but his blood pressure could not be measured, so he transferred the patient to the intensive care and anti-poison department. At 6:30, the patient's heart and breathing stopped. About 30 minutes later, the patient's pulse returned.
Then around 7:50 a.m., the patient's family rushed in, beat and scolded the doctor. However, the team continued to treat the patient.
At 3:40 p.m., the patient continued to have a second cardiac arrest and was given intensive care. At 4:20 p.m., the patient was in a coma, had a rapid heart rate, regular lung ventilation, and a soft abdomen. The family wrote a request for discharge.
Also according to this report, on the morning of May 4, male nurse NVH was assigned to the intensive care and anti-poison department to complete the handover procedures and support the patient's family. He was then scolded and beaten on the head and face by the patient's family.
The on-duty team took the male nurse to the hospital for a medical examination and invited the police to come in. He is currently being treated at the hospital's neurosurgery department, with a diagnosis of head and facial trauma.
There is currently no comment from the patient's family.
Strengthening security so doctors can save lives with peace of mind
Sharing his opinion on the recent assaults on medical staff, Mr. Ha Anh Duc - Director of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment, Ministry of Health - said that regarding the person who assaulted the male nurse at Nam Dinh General Hospital on the evening of May 4, the hospital said that they had worked with the provincial police, the police are completing the case file, but first will ask the family to publicly apologize to the shift on duty that day.
According to Mr. Duc, in both recent incidents, the nurses were beaten in treatment areas where there were still patients' relatives.
In addition to thoroughly resolving any problems that may arise from medical staff, such as further reforming the contact and explanation process for patients, further improving the quality of care and medical examination and treatment, hospitals should also not allow relatives of patients to enter emergency areas or perform procedures on patients because unnecessary misunderstandings may arise while waiting, thereby also avoiding the risk of conflict.
Besides, it is also recommended to strengthen security at hospitals to ensure the safety of doctors and medical staff.
