Identifying Contemporary Vietnamese Cities is a professional work but full of current events.

Identifying Contemporary Vietnamese Cities is the first book that most comprehensively and fully expresses Ngo Viet Nam Son's professional spirit and responsible career philosophy.

The book is divided into two parts:

Part 1: Urban Space & Time , the author, from the perspective of a planning expert, delves into issues such as preserving material and spiritual heritage in developing cities, and also offers ideas and potential solutions such as building health cities, nutrition andeducation cities, airport cities or smart cities...

With an academic writing style, the author presents many theoretical arguments to explain the reality of urban development in contemporary Vietnam. In particular, using the comparative method, the author places Vietnamese cities next to major cities around the world such as: New York, Tokyo, Paris, Milan, Shanghai... to broaden the perspective, showing that urban globalization and urban identity are common issues in many countries.

Part 2 - Cities & Imaginations , the author dissects each story (which has been current and will likely be repeated) specifically in Da Nang, Da Lat, Nha Trang, Thu Duc, Thua Thien-Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, Ma Pi Leng, Can Gio Biosphere Reserve... to present opinions and warnings with the constructive and critical spirit of a scientist and an expert.

Through short essays leading into specific cases to develop the arguments that may have been made in part 1, the author has placed the principles in the relationship and requirements of practice.

In addition, the work is also "wrapped up" with an article commemorating the author's father - planner and architect Ngo Viet Thu - with respect and gratitude, showing an interesting flow and continuity.

Written during a period when professionals in the field of planning and architecture had to witness many changes in the urban context of a developing country like Vietnam, Identifying Contemporary Vietnamese Urban Areas shows a period of observation, professional practice and rational, analytical "identification" of an expert with experience in research and practice in developed countries.

There, the author has presented a vivid picture, a thorough identification of portraits and identities of Vietnamese urban areas from the perspective of an architect and planning scientist interested in history, memories, and contemporary contexts placed on the fate of each city and place where we may have lived, are living and are attached.

Dr. Ngo Viet Nam Son shared: “The articles on architectural and urban planning in this book are written from the belief that we need to share information to create sympathy and understanding among all classes of people about urban issues, thereby arousing solidarity, joining forces to renovate and develop urban areas in a sustainable way, building livable cities, serving the diverse needs of the people, for the common good of the community, and further for the country”.

In the context of global urban areas being deeply impacted and becoming vulnerable to epidemics, climate change, etc., many articles in this book carry strong messages, consistent with a planning and architectural philosophy towards sustainable development, livability and safety for people.
