But above all, schools and teachers have made efforts to overcome the consequences to soon bring teaching and learning back to normal.

Heavy losses

At Trung Vuong Kindergarten (Phan Dinh Phung, Thai Nguyen), heavy rain and floods damaged the entire kitchen, boarding equipment, pumps, dish dryers, and rice cabinets. The medical room and 5 classrooms were flooded, damaging all the children's equipment and toys. Total damage was estimated at about 800 million VND.

At Quang Vinh Primary School (Quan Trieu, Thai Nguyen ), floodwaters rose to the first floor, causing electronic teaching equipment to be submerged and severely damaged; the school gate and surrounding walls collapsed. Ms. Ha Thi Quynh - Principal of the school said: "The floodwaters came so quickly that we were unable to react. By October 9, the water had only receded to waist level. Through observation, the amount of mud and dirt left behind was dense."

Ms. Quynh added that currently 90% of teachers and students in the area are flooded so they cannot be mobilized to clean up. Therefore, the school hopes to receive support from the army, organizations and other units to urgently clean and disinfect the school to welcome students back soon.

Also directly affected by storm No. 11, Cao Bang from the night of October 6 to October 7, heavy rain caused the flood peak of Bang River to exceed warning level 3 to 3.29m, causing deep flooding and widespread landslides.

Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Thu - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang said, we have asked units to count the damage to facilities, teaching equipment, books, and school supplies of students; develop a plan to mobilize resources from the scholarship fund, organizations, businesses and philanthropists to provide timely support.

Special priority is given to students from poor, near-poor households and extremely disadvantaged areas, ensuring that no student's studies are interrupted due to natural disasters. At the same time, schools are instructed to develop plans for make-up classes and adjust timetables appropriately, ensuring both the completion of the program and the maintenance of teaching and learning quality.

Continuous rains and floods since the beginning of October have submerged many localities in Tuyen Quang province, causing heavy damage to people's lives and the education sector. Dozens of schools were deeply flooded, facilities were damaged, books and teaching equipment were swept away... In Ha Giang 2 ward, the damage was even greater when many kindergartens and primary schools were deeply flooded, including schools that had to temporarily relocate their learning facilities.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham - Head of the Department of Culture and Society of Ha Giang 2 Ward informed: "During the 10th storm and flood, 14 out of 23 schools in the ward were affected. Among them, schools that were severely affected were Quang Trung Primary School, Hoa Mai Kindergarten, Hoa Lan Kindergarten... The total damage to educational units was about 18 billion VND.

According to statistics from the office of the Department of Education and Training of Bac Ninh, 95/1,173 schools (preschool, primary, secondary, high school) allowed students to take a day off and study online on October 9 to prevent storms and floods. Mr. Ta Viet Hung - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Bac Ninh said that due to closely monitoring the storm situation, schools in flooded areas have basically evacuated furniture and learning materials to higher floors for preservation. However, due to heavy rain and floods, many schools are still severely affected.

Promoting solidarity and mutual assistance

In Tuyen Quang, as soon as the flood receded, with the motto of "not interrupting students' learning", schools, authorities and the community made efforts to overcome the situation, gradually bringing teachers and students back to school safely.

Ly Tu Trong Secondary School (Vi Xuyen, Tuyen Quang) is one of the most severely affected schools. Principal Dang Thi Hong Nhung shared: As the water receded, the school focused on overcoming the consequences. However, the floodwater rose high, with some places being more than 2 meters deep, causing the school grounds, classrooms, and functional rooms to be heavily flooded; school supplies were submerged. After the water receded, a lot of mud and dirt remained in the school yard and classrooms.

With the efforts of teachers, the enthusiastic help and responsibility of the forces, the environmental sanitation work after the flood was basically completed quickly, the school campus was clean again. Books, school supplies, and blankets were also checked and dried for reuse. By October 8, students had returned to school safely and cleanly. Boarding activities for about 200 students were also carried out normally.

“Currently, charitable organizations and local authorities have provided and supported books, school supplies, and dormitory supplies for students. However, the school is lacking teaching equipment such as televisions and projectors,” Principal Dang Thi Hong Nhung shared.

Not only in the suburbs, in the center of Ha Giang 1 ward, the flood also seriously affected Le Quy Don Secondary School (Tuyen Quang), but the recovery work was implemented quickly, so from October 6, the school allowed 400 students to return to school. "The work of cleaning up mud and disinfecting the school grounds to ensure the health of students was carefully implemented. Flooded and damaged books and documents were gradually supplemented. However, the school still lacks many books and documents for the library...", said Ms. Dang Thi Thuy Linh - Principal.

At Hoa Chung Primary School (Cao Bang), as soon as the floodwaters began to recede (October 8), the principal mobilized all staff, teachers, police, riot police, unions, parents, etc. to participate in dredging mud, collecting equipment, and cleaning classrooms.

Ms. Ngo To Quyen - Principal of the school, said: "The entire school campus, 10 classrooms and functional rooms were flooded deeply, some places were flooded more than 2 meters. When the water receded, a large amount of mud was left behind, desks, chairs and school supplies were mostly damaged. The school must concentrate, mobilize maximum forces and coordinate with local authorities to overcome the consequences to welcome students back to school soon."

Faced with the serious damage, the Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang has directed educational establishments in the area to mobilize maximum local forces to clean and disinfect classrooms, ensuring a safe environment for students and teachers. At the same time, the Department of Education has closely coordinated with medical facilities and local authorities to prevent post-flood epidemics, ensuring that teaching and learning conditions are restored soon.

The impact of the flood also directly affected teachers and students. Some teachers lost all their property, even teacher Ha Thi Mac (Nguyen Hue Primary School) unfortunately broke her leg while participating in the cleanup and recovery. Many students lost all their books and school supplies. In this situation, the Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang promptly directed, schools proactively called for support, so they received some necessary teaching equipment and books.

“Despite many difficulties, the flooded schools basically have met the minimum conditions to resume teaching and learning from October 13. The schools also have plans to make up for the interrupted knowledge to ensure the program progress. Despite the difficulties and losses, the dedication and responsibility of the teaching staff make us extremely appreciative,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Tham - Head of the Department of Culture and Society of Ha Giang 2 Ward (Tuyen Quang).

Sharing the same emotion when recalling the days of struggling in the fierce flood, Ms. Ha Thi Mac - Principal of Nguyen Hue Primary School, Ha Giang 2 Ward (Tuyen Quang) shared: "Like many other educational units in Ha Giang 2 Ward, the school was greatly affected after the 10th storm and flood. But thanks to the solidarity of all teachers and staff of the school and the support of all levels, sectors and people... everything gradually returned to normal. This will be the motivation for the school to overcome difficulties and continue to improve the quality of education."

To promptly respond to storm No. 11, in Bac Ninh province from the night of October 8-9, military forces, police, security guards and thousands of people, including teachers, volunteered to reinforce the dike when the Cau River water level rose in the Dau Han dike area (Kinh Bac, Bac Ninh).

Directly participating in the dike protection, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tra - Hoa Long Kindergarten said: "At this time, students are off school to avoid floods, so I and 8 colleagues have strengthened the dike protection, shoveled sand, and built embankments to prevent overflow for 2 days now. About 40 teachers have supported the people, soldiers, and police to build embankments to avoid property damage. When the authorities and functional forces mobilized people to build embankments to prevent overflow, we and the people in the village volunteered to support to limit the damage that occurred."

According to Mr. Ta Viet Hung - Director of the Department of Education and Training of Bac Ninh: The Department has directed schools not to be subjective or negligent, to continue to strictly maintain the on-duty force, prevent natural disasters; to focus on directing and implementing the overcoming of storm consequences, ensuring school safety, and making every effort to bring students back to school as soon as possible.

Facilities require that immediately after the water recedes and the rain stops, officers, teachers, and staff focus on mobilizing human resources to clean up schools, overcome the consequences, and ensure safety for students going to class.
