Tesla's sales in China fell to 26,006 vehicles in October, the lowest in three years, as the US electric car maker struggles with weak demand in the fiercely competitive market.

Tesla's sales in China fell 35.8% year-on-year, but Tesla's exports in China rose to a two-year high of 35,491 in October, according to data released by the China Automobile Manufacturers Association on November 10.

Tesla is facing increasing pressure in China, its second-largest market after the US, in the third quarter. Tesla's share of the Chinese electric vehicle market fell to just 3.2% in October, down sharply from 8.7% the previous month and the lowest in more than three years.

Xiaomi, whose Tesla-rivaling models include the SU7 sedan and YU SUV, posted record sales of 48,654 units in October, even as accidents involving its sedans have raised concerns about electric vehicle safety.

China's overall auto sales fell as expected in October, as consumer sentiment weakened amid a scaling back of government subsidies and tax breaks.

Tesla’s poor performance in the world’s largest auto market follows a weak month for sales in European countries such as Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and the Nordic countries last month, the latest sign that Tesla is still struggling in the European market.
