Revenue of a public university approaches the 2,000 billion VND mark

Vietnam currently has 12 universities with revenues of thousands of billions, including 8 public schools and 4 private schools. Of these, the revenue of a public university is approaching the 2,000 billion VND/year mark.

Add public schools to the list of trillion-dollar universities

The third public report published by universities in 2025 shows that the 2024 revenue of all universities increased compared to the previous year. Notably, this result shows that Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education appeared for the first time in the list of universities with revenue of thousands of billions of VND.

Among the 12 units with revenue of thousands of billions of VND, 8 public universities include: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ton Duc Thang University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics leads the country in revenue among public universities in 2024, at nearly VND1,887 billion. This university's revenue is increasing sharply over the years, increasing by more than VND200 billion compared to 2023 and nearly doubling in 2021. Of the VND1,343 billion in revenue from education and training, tuition fees account for VND1,281 billion; the rest is from contracts and state and external sponsorship. Notably, this university's income from science and technology transfer is at VND520.8 billion (accounting for 27% of revenue). This is the university with the largest revenue from science and technology among the schools with current trillion-dollar revenue.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology's total revenue in 2024 will be VND1,502 billion, an increase of nearly VND80 billion compared to the previous year (in 2023 it will reach VND1,424 billion). Of the VND1,343 billion in revenue from education and training, tuition fees account for VND1,277 billion; the rest comes from contracts, sponsorships and the budget. Revenue from scientific research and technology transfer of this university will reach VND101 billion; other income will be VND58 billion.

Ton Duc Thang University's revenue in 2024 will reach more than 1,224 billion VND. Of the 1,129 billion VND from education and training, tuition fees account for 1,072 billion VND; the rest is from contracts and state and external funding. The university's income from scientific research and technology transfer is 44.8 billion VND and other income is 49.7 billion VND.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy has a total revenue of 1,123 billion VND in 2024. Of which, revenue from education and training is 846 billion VND, including tuition fees of 821 billion VND and the rest from contracts, state and external funding, and other sources of revenue. Income from scientific research and technology transfer is 105 billion VND; other income is 172 billion VND.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (VNU-HCM) has a total revenue of 1,184 billion VND in 2024. Of which, revenue from education and training is 1,054 billion VND, including tuition fees of 873 billion VND. Income from scientific research and technology transfer is 126.5 billion VND; other income is 418 million VND.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education has a total revenue of 1,120 billion VND in 2024. Of which, tuition fees account for 976 billion VND; revenue from scientific research and technology transfer 46 billion VND; revenue from other sources 67 billion VND; funding from the budget and outside only 13 billion VND.

In addition, the two universities that achieved revenue of over VND1,000 billion in 2023 include the National Economics University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry. These two units have not yet disclosed their 2024 financial statements. In 2023, the revenue of these two units was VND1,408 billion (National Economics University) and VND1,011 billion (Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry), respectively.

Which private universities have revenue of trillions?

While the revenue of public universities is gradually approaching the 2,000 billion VND/year mark, some private universities already have several thousand billion VND from the previous year.

In 2023, two private universities with "huge" revenue of over 2,000 billion VND include FPT University with 2,918 billion VND and Van Lang University with 2,286 billion VND. According to FPT's 2025 annual report, the group's education-investment and other business results in 2024 had a growth rate of 9.8% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, Van Lang University has not yet publicly disclosed its 2024 finances.

In addition, two other private universities continued to report increased revenue compared to the previous year. In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology had a total revenue of VND 1,380 billion, continuing to increase compared to VND 1,260 billion in 2023. Of which, the school's revenue comes from two sources: tuition and student fees accounting for VND 1,309 billion and contracts and external sponsorship accounting for VND 70,384 billion.

Nguyen Tat Thanh University's total revenue in 2024 is over VND 1,669 billion. The school's revenue also continues to increase compared to last year by more than VND 100 billion (in 2023, the school's total revenue was over VND 1,528 billion). Of which, revenue from education and training accounts for over VND 1,654 billion and revenue from science and technology accounts for VND 14.51 billion.
