"The profession chooses the person"
That was a joke but true that Dong shared with us when talking about the arduous journey, but also full of joy when coming to the profession of making dragons and phoenixes from flowers, leaves, vegetables and fruits. Starting out as a young man passionate about cooking, then carpentry, orchid arranging, Phan Van Dong has experienced many ups and downs when finding the destination of his life.
Dong confided: “I came to this profession from the first tray of gifts I made for my best friend’s wedding. After a lot of effort and ups and downs, I realized that making dragon and phoenix wedding trays has become my passion since when.”
Without going to any school, but with aesthetic sense and constant research and learning, modern dragon and phoenix trays have become the brand of the 9X guy. On average, Phan Van Dong makes 20-30 dragon and phoenix trays every month. During peak months, the number of trays doubles, or even more. “At those times, I really only slept 2-3 hours a day, it was hard work, but in return, I had a good income and completed beautiful dragon and phoenix wedding trays for guests, contributing to making the wedding more beautiful and solemn. That is a joy that is hard to measure,” Dong confided.
With his skills, students from all over have come to Dong to learn the profession. In addition to students in the province, the largest number of students are still from Quang Nam, Da Nang, Quang Tri, Quang Binh, and there are students from Hanoi who also travel to Hue to study. Young person Nguyen Huong, from Dak Lak shared: “I want to pursue the career of making wedding trays, so I came to Hue to study with Dong. Dong's dragon and phoenix style is modern, constantly updated, so it is very trendy and loved by young people. Although it is a bit far away, because of my passion for the profession, I want to learn continuously to be able to pursue this passion.”
The majestic wedding gate
From the success of the dragon and phoenix trays, Phan Van Dong has set himself a bigger goal, which is to create majestic and unique dragon and phoenix wedding gates with the traditional Western wedding gate style.
The young man said: “In the past, dragon and phoenix wedding gates were typical wedding products of people in the West. But over time, these wedding gates have gradually been replaced by iron-frame gates and artificial flowers. In Hue , wedding gates decorated with coconut leaves or natural materials have almost disappeared. Therefore, I want to make beautiful and majestic dragon and phoenix wedding gates, bringing a simple yet luxurious beauty to many couples on their big day.”
Made from materials such as areca, chili, okra, pandan leaves, and calimero chrysanthemums, it usually takes Phan Van Dong a whole week to complete the dragon and phoenix wedding gate. Dong said: “To create the dragon and phoenix shape, in addition to the rough structure, it also requires dozens of kilograms of flowers, leaves, and various fruits and vegetables. Of which, it takes me three days to design and shape the rough part, and the remaining days to complete each detail.”
With the characteristics of natural materials, in addition to ensuring the freshness of flowers, leaves, and fruits, Phan Van Dong must ensure the curves and curves as well as how to fully express the demeanor and majesty of the dragon and phoenix. "Therefore, not only experience, making wedding gates also requires the craftsman's high concentration to every small detail. Only then can the unique features from the dragon's scales, the phoenix's wings to the lively, soulful eyes of the dragon and phoenix be expressed to the maximum, while still maintaining the harmony and grace when viewed as a whole," Phan Van Dong analyzed.
Bao Hung (Gia Hoi ward), a customer who chose Dong's dragon and phoenix wedding gate for his big day, shared: "Through social networks, I learned about Dong's dragon and phoenix wedding gate design service. Because I really liked it, I chose this wedding gate for my big day. When the wedding gate was completed, not only the two families, but also the guests were especially excited and amazed by the new and majestic beauty of this wedding gate."
Not only does he create beautiful and unique wedding gates, Phan Van Dong also shares his love for his profession with those who share the same passion. Currently, the young man is managing a fanpage for learning how to make engagement and wedding flowers with more than 43,000 members. This is where members share experiences, learn new things, thereby spreading more love and enthusiasm for the profession of making dragon and phoenix trays.
