Every time I visit Hoi An, I usually go to Tra Que vegetable village. Even the name itself sparks curiosity. It's not a scenic spot, just a vegetable village, but its charm has been building up over five centuries, making it a powerful tourist attraction, especially for foreign visitors.

Leaving Hoi An and traveling about 3 km towards the sea, you'll immediately encounter a sign pointing to Tra Que Vegetable Village. The small sign is just visible enough for visitors to follow the small path into this vegetable haven. Tra Que Vegetable Village is located in Tra Que village, Cam Ha commune, Hoi An, Quang Nam . According to locals, Tra Que Vegetable Village was formerly called Nhu Que, where they grew fragrant vegetables like cinnamon, hence the name Tra Que. Of course, it's just vegetables here, but the village has become a unique tourist attraction precisely because of the distinctiveness of its produce.

Rain or shine, the villagers of Tra Que continue to work in the fields, cultivating vegetables as their main occupation. Meanwhile, tourists, in groups, stroll around the vegetable gardens. In fact, if you observe closely, Tra Que vegetable village is no different from other vegetable gardens throughout Vietnam. But Tra Que vegetables have a story; to produce fragrant and delicious vegetables, the growers use moss from the nearby Co Co River as a base fertilizer, and the water used for irrigation is also from the Co Co River.

Today, there are pathways for tourists to visit. In the vegetable-growing area, people still go about their daily work such as planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables. Here, neatly arranged rectangular plots are planted with a variety of vegetables such as basil, herbs, lettuce, and kale… The lush green vegetable gardens create a beautiful splash of color in the Hoi An landscape.

There's a dedicated area for visitors to experience something unique to Tra Que vegetable village: carrying two buckets of water from the reservoir and watering the vegetables along the rows. The sight of water spraying from the watering cans, gently touching the lush leaves, is incredibly beautiful. And if they wish, visitors can be guided in planting vegetables, a useful lesson so that when they return home, they can create their own small vegetable garden.

Bicycles are readily available, and visitors can cycle around. In Tra Que, there are trellises of flowering loofahs, vines of fruit-laden gourds, and short but heavily laden papaya trees. You can cup your hand in the water from the irrigation tap and wash your face, savoring the experience. Of course, the vegetables in Tra Que are very clean; you can pick a fragrant herb, taste the natural flavor, and see why this place is called Tra Que. And if you're hungry, there are restaurants nearby, and the most popular dish is banh xeo (Vietnamese savory pancake) with Tra Que vegetables.
