Foreign Affairs of the Week: Lithuanian President visits Vietnam, Prime Minister successfully concludes European working trip

TG&VN Newspaper reviews some outstanding activities of Vietnam's foreign affairs during the week from June 9-16.

High-level diplomacy

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and his wife Diana Nausediene paid an official visit to Vietnam from June 11-12 at the invitation of President Luong Cuong. During their visit to Vietnam, President Gitanas Nauseda and his wife laid a wreath and visited President Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum; laid a wreath at the Monument to Heroes and Martyrs on Bac Son Street (Ba Dinh, Hanoi ). General Secretary To Lam received President Gitanas Nauseda. President Luong Cuong presided over the official welcoming ceremony , held talks , and hosted a banquet for President Gitanas Nauseda; the two leaders witnessed the signing of a number of cooperation documents between the two countries in the fields of energy, science and technology, agriculture , and finance. National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with the President of Lithuania.

On June 12, at the Presidential Palace, President Luong Cuong had a phone call with the new President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung right after he took office . President Luong Cuong highly appreciated President Lee Jae Myung's importance in relations with the Asian region; at the same time, he emphasized that the early phone call showed the importance of relations with Vietnam.

On June 13, the plane carrying Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation arrived in Hanoi, successfully concluding the working trip to attend the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3), and the official visit to the Republic of Estonia and the Kingdom of Sweden from June 4-14. The 10-day working trip, with 3 destinations and more than 80 events of the Prime Minister achieved many important and substantive results, thereby further deepening the bilateral relations between Vietnam and the countries, for the benefit of each side and contributing to peace, cooperation and development in the region and the world.


Activities of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs

Receiving Australian Ambassador Gillian Bird on the occasion of the Ambassador's first term in Vietnam on June 16, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son emphasized that the Vietnam-Australia economic cooperation enhancement strategy is the foundation for economic cooperation. The two sides need to increase market opening, effectively promote free trade agreements to which both countries are members, in order to soon bring two-way trade turnover to the target of 20 billion USD, as well as contribute to maintaining a rules-based free trade system and ensuring supply chains.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Bui Thanh Son answered the press about the results of the working trip to attend the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC 3), the official visit to the Republic of Estonia and the Kingdom of Sweden by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam.


Bilateral diplomacy

On June 11 in Beijing, Vietnamese Ambassador to China Pham Thanh Binh paid a courtesy call to Chairman of the Chinese State Ethnic Committee Phan Nhac . At the meeting, Ambassador Pham Thanh Binh affirmed that the Party and State of Vietnam always pay attention to promoting socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

Immediately after concluding high-level activities during his official visit to Vietnam, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda exclusively shared with TG&VN the results of the visit and assessed the prospects for cooperation between the two countries.

On the occasion of the official visit of Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and his wife to Vietnam (June 11-12), Lithuanian Ambassador to Vietnam Darius Gaidys shared with TG&VN about the significance of the visit and the potential for cooperation between the two countries.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Israel Ly Duc Trung gave a quick interview to The World and Vietnam Newspaper about the community situation and the latest developments in the Iran-Israel conflict, which is escalating very complicatedly.

Former New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam James Kember (2006-2009) answered the press on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and New Zealand (June 19, 1975 - June 19, 2025).


Multilateral diplomacy

On June 13, receiving Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) in charge of peacekeeping operations on the occasion of his visit and work in Vietnam, Deputy Foreign Minister Do Hung Viet emphasized that Vietnam wants to increase its substantive and effective contributions to UN activities, including peacekeeping operations.

From June 10-12, the 18th Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) took place at the UN headquarters with the theme “Enhancing public awareness of the rights and contributions of persons with disabilities in social development, towards the Second World Summit on Social Development”. Ambassador Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN attended the Conference.

On June 10-11, in Malaysia, a series of Senior Officials Meetings (SOM) took place within the framework of ASEAN , ASEAN+3, East Asia Summit (EAS) and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), with the participation of delegates from 10 ASEAN countries and 17 partners. Authorized by the leaders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tran Duc Binh, Director of the ASEAN Department, led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the meetings.


Citizen protection

In the early morning of June 13 (Iran time), Israel attacked several locations in the capital Tehran and several provinces of Iran. Given the increasingly complicated developments of the Israel-Iran conflict, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that Vietnamese citizens do not travel to Israel and Iran unless absolutely necessary. The Vietnamese Embassy in Iran is ready to provide citizen protection measures in case the war escalates further in the coming days.


Spokesperson News

On June 14, answering a reporter's question about Brazil's announcement that Vietnam has officially become a partner country of the BRICS Group of Emerging Economies (BRICS) , Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang emphasized that Vietnam became a partner country with the desire to make efforts to contribute, enhance the voice and role of developing countries, and promote international solidarity.

On June 13, in response to a reporter's question asking about Vietnam's reaction to the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East , the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Vietnam is deeply concerned about the current tense situation in the Middle East.


Other activities

On June 15, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Trade Union and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Running Club (MOFA Runners) organized a Run in response to the online race "Journey from 50 years to 80 years - Vietnamese Diplomacy with historical milestones" at Thong Nhat Park, Hanoi. The race was attended by Ms. Do Ngoc Thuy, Chairwoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Trade Union and about 50 athletes from units under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On June 14, the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics chaired and coordinated the organization of a national training conference on professional skills for cadres and civil servants related to the political system at the commune level (new). At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs bridge, a large number of cadres, party members and civil servants from units within the Ministry seriously and fully attended the working sessions of the Conference.
