On the way to Mat village, we saw many new motorbikes parked in front of houses, trucks carrying goods also speeding on the way to the village to buy agricultural products. Stopping to talk to Mr. Lo Van Bun, he shared: Before, life was very difficult, with the same area but we did not know how to take care of the plants, so the yield and economic efficiency were low. Now it is different, with technical guidance from specialized agencies, every family knows how to do business, the economy is stable.
Mr. Luong Van Kim, Party cell secretary, head of Mat village, Muong Leo commune, informed: The village has 114 households, 517 people, mainly Thai ethnic group. Before 2000, Mat village still had many difficulties, the whole village had up to 90% poor households, every year, up to 85% of families were hungry during the lean season. Production on slash-and-burn fields followed old customs, only one crop per year so productivity was low, livestock was left to roam freely, people in the village did not know how to apply technical advances in production and animal husbandry. In the rainy season, the road to the village was very difficult, so agricultural products of households in the village were difficult to sell, or if they were sold, the price was also cheap.
Life here began to change in 2010, when the national grid came to the village, people learned about television, loudspeakers, and expanded their knowledge in developing farming and livestock. In 2013, responding to the new rural construction movement, people in the village contributed over 240 million VND, donated more than 5,000 m² of land, 1,300 working days, and with the support of the state, the village built a community house and repaired many internal roads, facilitating travel and transportation of agricultural products.
Over the years, with the support of the State through national target programs, it has created the premise for people to develop the economy and rise up to eliminate poverty. People in the village are always united and unanimous with the local government to overcome difficulties and work enthusiastically in production. From there, they contribute to building and promoting economic and social development, ensuring security, social order and safety, and people's lives are gradually improved and enhanced.
With more than 100 hectares of agricultural land, the villagers have taken advantage of the advantages of bringing high-value seedlings and livestock into production and livestock raising. Currently, the village has over 30 hectares of oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits, with an output of over 150 tons of fruit per year; 18 hectares of coffee, 20 hectares of cassava, 39 hectares of rice, and 52 hectares of pine trees. Livestock and poultry have also been strongly invested in and developed in the direction of commodities; thanks to good vaccination work, there have been no major epidemics, raising over 800 buffaloes and cows, 300 local pigs, and over 1,500 poultry. To develop livestock farming, the village has renovated and fenced off over 7 hectares of grazing land to create a natural food source.
A typical example in Mat village is the breeding model of deer of Mrs. Lo Thi Ma's family, which is bringing high economic efficiency, helping the family have a stable life. Mrs. Ma shared: After accidentally catching a wild deer stranded in the field in front of the house and buying another deer from people caught in the forest, the family researched the habits of this animal through the mass media to develop this model. During the breeding process, the Forest Protection Department of Region XI guided them through the procedures for registration and licensing. Up to now, more than 30 deer breeds have been sold to the provinces of Phu Tho, Lang Son , and Quang Ninh. The price is 30-40 million VND for a pair of 6-month-old deer breeds, bringing a significant source of income for the family.
With economic development, Mat village is improving day by day. The poverty rate has decreased from 36 poor households in 2020 to 7 households. 100% of families have access to the national grid and clean water; 95% of households have audio-visual equipment, and the average income per capita by 2025 will reach more than 30 million VND/person/year. People actively respond to the movement "All people unite to build a cultural life"; the education of children in the village is taken care of, with 100% of school-age children going to school, many of whom are studying at universities and colleges in the province and outside the province.
Thanks to the attention and support of all levels and sectors with many practical support policies and changes in people's thinking and awareness about hunger eradication and poverty reduction, the lives of the people in Mat village have had many positive changes. The new rural appearance is changing, the people in the village are always united and unanimous in building the border village to become more and more prosperous.
