The dialogue highlighted a rules-based maritime order and enhanced defense ties, including India's recent transfer of the BrahMos long-range supersonic cruise missile to the Philippines.
The two countries pledged to cooperate to ensure a rules-based maritime order in response to China’s assertive claims in the South China Sea, stressing the strategic importance of safe sea lanes in the region. They also stressed the importance of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The dialogue covered sharing of naval best practices, joint maritime capacity building, and expanding cooperation between navies and coast guards. The two sides agreed to hold the next round of dialogue in New Delhi, India, in 2025.
In another development, according to the Daily Tribune, the Philippines has harshly criticized China before the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, accusing the country of "severely distorting" the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Ambassador Antonio M. Lagdameo, Head of the Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the United Nations in New York, spoke at the 51st plenary session of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, affirming the Philippines' sovereignty over Scarborough Shoal (called Bajo de Masinloc by Manila).
The Philippines criticized China's announcement of baselines around Bajo de Masinloc and submission to the UN Secretary-General of its territorial sea baseline map as a violation of UNCLOS and undermining the rules-based international order.
