On August 24, news from Can Tho Children's Hospital said that the hospital's doctors had just performed an endoscopy and emergency treatment on a child who had swallowed a foreign object, a coin, into the esophagus and got stuck in the stomach.

Previously, baby NMD (6 years old, living in Giong Rieng district, Kien Giang province) was playing with his family. While playing with coins, baby D. accidentally swallowed a coin down his throat.

After that, D. was taken to a nearby hospital by his family. After taking X-rays and examining him, the doctors told his family to monitor D.'s health at home. However, after 5 days of monitoring, the coin still had not been passed out, so the family quickly took him to Can Tho Children's Hospital to remove the foreign object.

Through examination, X-ray, and abdominal ultrasound, the doctors discovered a foreign object in the child's stomach. Recognizing this as a difficult case, the team decided to perform an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy under anesthesia to remove the foreign object through an endotracheal tube. During the endoscopy, the team discovered a metal coin about 2 cm in diameter in the child's stomach; at the same time, they removed the foreign object using a safety noose.

Dr. Thai Thanh Lam, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Can Tho Children's Hospital, said that foreign bodies in the digestive tract are common in young children. By reflex, children often put anything in their hands into their mouths and swallow. The Department of Gastroenterology has encountered many cases of foreign bodies, usually batteries, coins, plastic bottle caps... If sharp foreign objects, metals, corrosive substances... are not removed by endoscopy early, there is a risk of perforation of the stomach or small intestine, leading to life-threatening situations.

Dr. Lam also recommends that parents keep small objects out of reach of children. If a child is found to have a foreign object in their mouth, they should be taken to a medical facility for examination and removal as soon as possible.
