Stroke can be prevented this way

Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death globally, with life-threatening events such as heart attacks and strokes often coming on suddenly and with devastating consequences.

An Australian study has found that just one simple habit - drinking black tea every day - can significantly reduce the risk of stroke, according to the Times Of India.

What did the study find?

The study, conducted by scientists at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Australia, included 881 older participants, mainly women. They were asked to report on the frequency of food consumption, including tea drinking habits.

Results found that people who regularly drank black tea had a significantly lower risk of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) than those who did not drink tea.

Specifically, drinking 2-6 cups of tea per day (240 ml/cup) reduces the risk of AAC by 16-42% compared to not drinking tea, according to Times Of India.

The study authors explain that the reason black tea does this miracle is thanks to the flavonoid plant compounds that are abundant in tea. Flavonoids are known for their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Of these, two common flavonoids in black tea, flavan-3-ols and flavonols, have been shown to be directly related to reducing the level of arterial calcification.

Research shows that people who consume high levels of total flavonoids and the two types of flavonoids found in black tea mentioned above have a 36-39% reduced risk of AAC.

According to lead study author Dr Ben Parmenter, from Edith Cowan University, AAC is a major predictor of vascular events. Flavonoid supplementation, particularly from black tea, may be effective in protecting against heart attacks and strokes.

For most people, tea is the main source of flavonoids, which are easy to supplement and have clear benefits for heart health, says Dr. Parmenter.

This study once again confirms that simple changes in diet, such as a few cups of black tea a day, can have a positive impact on cardiovascular health, preventing stroke, especially in the elderly.
