Election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly is expected to take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

On the morning of May 12, in the Proposal on shortening the term of the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh proposed that the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term be elected on Sunday, May 23, 2021; the first session of the National Assembly will open on July 20, 2021 and the People's Councils at all levels will also open around this time.

According to regulations, by July 20, 2026, the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term will end their term and by May 24, 2026, the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term must be elected.

However, based on the Party's policies and practical requirements, it is necessary to shorten the time between the National Party Congress and the first session of the National Assembly and the People's Council of the new term to promptly complete high-level personnel, assign new-term Party Committee members to ensure synchronization, comprehensiveness, continuous stability, and connection of key cadres in Party, State, Government, Fatherland Front, and socio- political organizations. At the same time, Party Committees at all levels of the new term promptly implement the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress and Party Congresses at all levels.

Based on the provisions of the Constitution and laws, in order to implement Resolution No. 60-NQ/TW dated April 12, 2025 of the 11th Conference of the 13th Party Central Committee, after careful, thorough and comprehensive consideration, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly found that the election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term scheduled to be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026 is in line with practical requirements. Therefore, shortening the term of the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term is necessary.

“To shorten the term of the National Assembly and People's Councils with the above-mentioned goal, but still have enough time to carry out procedures and processes in the election work, the National Assembly Standing Committee proposes that the term of the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term be shortened by 3 months, ending in early April 2026 (instead of July 2026),” said National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thanh.
