Speaking with Tien Phong reporter, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Biology teacher at the High School for the Gifted - Hanoi National University of Education, said that the number of candidates taking the Biology exam in 2025 has decreased significantly, to only more than 72,000 candidates, while in previous years there were more than 300,000 candidates.
Assuming that the enrollment target for the medical major remains stable, this decrease in enrollment could cause the admission score to drop by 0.5 to 1 point, or even more in some schools. “Top medical schools will still maintain a high level of competition, while the lower-ranked schools are expected to have admission scores of only 24 to 25.5 points. Candidates with scores above 24 points have a good chance of being admitted if they know how to arrange their wishes properly,” said Mr. Cong.
According to Mr. Cong, the minimum admission score for the medical major of top schools will play a role in guiding other majors of the medical school and majors recruiting block B00 of other schools. Candidates should base on the fluctuation of this score to set their wishes for other suitable schools.
Analysis from admissions experts shows that with a score of 20 points, the chance of being admitted to top medical universities is very low. The history of benchmark scores in recent years shows that "hot" majors such as Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy at these schools often have benchmark scores of 25 points or more. With 20 points, candidates can seek higher admission opportunities at medical schools or multidisciplinary schools that train in health sectors in provinces and cities.
Teacher Ngo Xuan Quynh, a teacher at Phan Dinh Phung High School (Hanoi), said that in Chemistry, the score range shifted from 7.75 to the 5.0-5.25 range, showing that the number of candidates with good to excellent scores has decreased sharply, while the number of low scores has increased dramatically.
Mr. Quynh commented that the left-skewed score distribution causes the overall score level of candidates to be pulled down. While the number of excellent students is scarce and the average score is decreasing, the benchmark scores of schools are forced to adjust to ensure the source of candidates.
At mid-level schools and regional universities in the A00 (Math-Physics-Chemistry) and B00 (Math-Chemistry-Biology) blocks, the benchmark scores will drop sharply by 2-3 points, due to the large decrease in the percentage of candidates reaching the admission threshold. This is a golden opportunity for candidates with good academic performance but not as high scores as in previous years.
The top schools (Medical-Pharmacy, Polytechnic, Natural Sciences ) have low scores, but the group of excellent students is still large enough to compete, the standard score only decreases very slightly, 0.25 - 1 point, or even remains the same due to "competition for the top".
“For schools that take a secondary combination with Chemistry (A01, D07...), the impact will depend on the fluctuations in the remaining subjects (Math, English, Biology), but the possibility of the benchmark score still decreasing slightly due to Chemistry, Math, English, Biology pulling down the total score” - Mr. Quynh said.
Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that the average scores of all subjects decreased compared to last year, except for Physics.
According to Professor Duc, this year, top schools such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, University of Technology (Hanoi National University), Foreign Trade University, National Economics University, and Medical and Pharmaceutical schools have many majors to choose from, have prestigious and quality training, and graduates have good job opportunities. The standard score has decreased compared to previous years, but not too much.
As for the vast majority of schools, or for majors that last year had admission scores of 24-26 points, many majors will decrease sharply, from 2-4 points.
If in previous years, many students who lacked 0.1 points could fail the university entrance exam, this year, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc said that this situation could still happen in hot majors, top schools, and medical schools with high admission scores.
University benchmark scores will be announced before 5:00 p.m. on August 22.
