Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee chaired the meeting with leaders of public and private higher education institutions in the city. Also attending the meeting were Mr. Nguyen Van Khoi, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee; representatives of the city's Departments, Boards and Branches.
According to the report of the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City , as of October 31, 2025, Can Tho City has 8 higher education institutions, including: 4 public schools and 4 private schools.
Of which, 1 school is under the People's Committee of Can Tho City, 5 schools are under the Ministry of Education and Training , 1 school is under the Ministry of Health and 1 school is under the Ministry of Construction.
Every year, training institutions enroll nearly 30,000 students to serve the human resource training needs of the Mekong Delta region. The training majors at universities in Can Tho are diverse, covering the fields of agriculture, engineering, economics, pedagogy, medicine, social sciences and humanities, tourism, construction, technology and logistics.

The training institutions offer many levels of education from undergraduate to postgraduate (masters, doctorates), and develop high-quality and advanced programs that meet regional and international standards. The total number of students studying at the schools is over 100,000.
At the meeting, representatives of higher education institutions raised a number of difficulties and made recommendations such as: The City People's Committee should continue to pay attention to and support infrastructure development, expand training scale and perfect policy mechanisms to promote sustainable development of higher education...

For example, Can Tho University and Can Tho University of Technology proposed to use and transfer surplus headquarters and facilities. Nam Can Tho University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture (Can Tho campus) proposed to support land allocation and expand training facilities. Vo Truong Toan University hopes to continue to be facilitated to develop training, research and community service activities.
Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy proposed the city to support capital sources, public-private partnership procedures, implement phase 2 of the school and hospital construction project, approve planning adjustments and allow the establishment of science and technology enterprises; at the same time, consider transferring the old headquarters in Hau Giang and Soc Trang to build facilities 2 and 3 to serve training, research and practice.


The schools also proposed that Can Tho City issue a specific policy for developing higher education with 6 groups of contents: prioritizing investment in land funds, infrastructure and socialization of resources; rewarding and attracting talents; enhancing scientific research and technology transfer; promoting innovation and student start-ups; expanding regional links and international cooperation; and at the same time increasing autonomy and perfecting the management mechanism. These recommendations aim to build a modern higher education system, linked to the economic and social development needs of Can Tho City and the Mekong Delta region.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, emphasized the important role of universities in human resource training and scientific research. At the same time, he affirmed that the city always cares, shares and supports the schools.
Can Tho City People's Committee assigned Departments and Branches to review and adjust school planning until 2030, build national key schools, develop human resources, attract talents and promote scientific research through the Science and Technology Development Fund.
Schools are encouraged to cooperate domestically and internationally, and to send recommendations and proposals to the People's Committee Office to receive support in accordance with regulations...
