1. Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve – An important biological paradise in the Southwest region
Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve is located in Cai Be District, Tien Giang Province, known as the “kingdom of birds” with a diverse and rich ecosystem. This is one of the important conservation areas of the Mekong Delta, especially for waterfowl and wildlife. The reserve covers an area of about 20,000 hectares, including a system of Melaleuca forests, lotus fields and natural rivers and canals. (*)
(*) With a total area of 19 km², of which 18 km² is a buffer zone, Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve is a wetland ecological area. The core area of the reserve has an area of 100 ha (1 km²), including 40 ha of primary Melaleuca forest and 40 ha of water surface, the remaining buffer zone is mainly Melaleuca forest.
This place has rich biodiversity with 156 species of plants, 147 species of birds, 34 species of fish, 8 species of amphibians and 30 species of insects. Among them, there are many rare species such as snail stork, snake-necked (diên điện), old day, black quam, grey heron, red heron, ivory stork, dang sen, of which some species are endangered and listed in the Vietnam Red Book.
In addition, the reserve has also been successful in breeding and hatching a number of animal species in captivity, including golden mountain tortoises, mangroves, porcupines, wild boars and crocodiles.
Every year, during the migratory bird season (usually from November to April), this area becomes a gathering place for thousands of storks, herons... and other birds, creating a mysterious natural scene. Tourists can come here to join a boat trip along the small canals, admire the wild nature and explore the animal life here.
