Dong Thap Muoi pineapple has favorable price and output during flood season

Currently, farmers in the communes of Dong Thap Muoi (Dong Thap province): Tan Phuoc 1, Tan Phuoc 2, Tan Phuoc 3 and Hung Thanh commune have reclaimed and planted nearly 15,400 hectares of specialized pineapple, the largest in the Tien River region; annual output is over 245,000 tons of fruit. Pineapple is a key agricultural product of Dong Thap province, with high consumption and export value, and in recent times has helped farmers in the new land to build a solid foundation.

Fortunately, during the flood season of 2025, Dong Thap Muoi pineapples have favorable prices and output. Specifically, the price of commercial pineapples currently fluctuates from 7,500 VND to 8,500 VND/kg, depending on the time. With this price, each hectare of pineapple farmers achieve a production value of 150 - 170 million VND, after deducting costs, the profit is about 50% of the total revenue.

With high income and stable life, farmers in specialized areas are excited and confident in organizing production reasonably and effectively, promoting the potential of pineapple plants in Dong Thap Muoi region according to the policy of "living with floods" and mitigating natural disasters.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dien, residing in Tan Phuoc 1 commune, a typical good farmer and businessman in the local pineapple growing area, pineapple trees are suitable for the soil of the alum-contaminated Dong Thap Muoi, giving high productivity and output. Therefore, when responding to the state's policy of migrating to new lands, he chose pineapple trees as his main business.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dien's family grows 5 hectares of pineapple. Thanks to the synchronous application of intensive farming techniques, he achieves an average yield of 25 tons/ha - the highest in the region; each year he achieves a commercial pineapple output of 125 tons, selling for a profit of 400 - 500 million VND.

Similarly, farmer Nguyen Van Ngu, residing in Tan Phuoc 2 commune, is also a typical good farmer and businessman in the alum-contaminated land of Dong Thap Muoi. With 3.2 hectares of specialized pineapple, each year Mr. Ngu achieves a yield of hundreds of tons of commercial pineapple, bringing in high profits. To build a sustainable business, he also combines building barns to raise pigs, beef cattle, etc. His comprehensive economic model is being replicated in this new land with great potential.

According to the assessment of specialized pineapple growers, currently, pineapple prices remain stable and high thanks to the "Tan Phuoc pineapple" brand which has affirmed its position in the market, consumer trust, convenient consumption, and large market demand. Thanks to the stable and high price of pineapple, during the 2025 flood season, farmers have a good income.

In recent times, to promote the potential and strengths of the endemic pineapple plant of Dong Thap Muoi, helping farmers invest in intensive farming in the direction of "living with floods" to bring high socio-economic efficiency, localities with large specialized growing areas have paid attention to investing in completing traffic and irrigation infrastructure to serve production, prevent floods, adapt to climate change, and mitigate natural disasters.

The whole region has mobilized resources, built nearly 800 km of dikes, combined with developing traffic connecting the sub-region and connecting the Dong Thap Muoi region with neighboring provinces to facilitate trade, consumption of agricultural products, promote comprehensive development and create a new, rich and beautiful rural appearance.

In addition, 131 dike boxes were completed, protecting 100% of the pineapple growing area from annual flooding. At the same time, 198 electric pumping stations were installed to prevent floods, waterlogging, and drought and salinity when necessary; contributing to mitigating natural disasters while ensuring sustainable development of the local pineapple growing area.

At the same time, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province also cooperates with localities to focus on transferring science and technology for intensive cultivation and pineapple restoration to increase productivity, output and quality of the Dong Thap Muoi pineapple region. Typically, the model of "Sustainable production of Queen pineapple", adding MD 2 pineapple variety with many advantages to the cultivation structure, popularizing the technique of handling fruit in different seasons, etc. has been effectively implemented in recent times.

Nowadays, the technique of handling fruit in different seasons is widely applied by farmers in Dong Thap Muoi region, creating a revolution in the field of intensive cultivation of specialty crops. Thanks to that, Dong Thap pineapple can be harvested almost all year round, helping to avoid the situation of overlapping seasons, market overcrowding, and price loss. People in the newly reclaimed land are very excited and confident to promote production and intensive cultivation.

The specialized communes have established 16 agricultural cooperatives. The network of cooperatives has increased the signing of contracts to consume members' products with units, businesses, and purchasing and consumption warehouses in the area according to the value chain model. The output of consumption contracts according to the value chain linkage model in specialized communes is up to thousands of tons of fruit/year.

Thanks to the consumption linkage, farmers sell at an average price of 500 VND/kg higher than the market price, with favorable output, and the economic efficiency of pineapples has increased significantly, benefiting people. From there, a new future is opened for the sustainable development of specialized pineapple growing areas in Dong Thap Muoi of Dong Thap province in the context of the whole country firmly entering a new era today.
