At the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam and his wife paid an official visit to Malaysia from November 21 to 23.
The visit conveys the message that Vietnam wishes to work with Malaysia to bring the relationship of trust and effective cooperation between the two countries to a new stage at a higher and more practical level, meeting the development requirements of each country.
After nearly 40 years of implementing the renovation process, under the comprehensive leadership of the Party, Vietnam has gained an increasingly high foundation, potential and international position. The implementation of the Resolution of the 13th National Party Congress, the Socio-Economic Development Plan and foreign affairs have achieved many important achievements.
The entire Party, people and army are determined to successfully carry out the tasks and goals set out by the 13th National Party Congress and prepare well the contents and personnel for the 14th National Party Congress, towards a new era, the era of national growth; prioritizing the implementation of the two 100-year development goals to 2030 and 2045.
Vietnam continues its comprehensive and synchronous innovation, including perfecting the political system, building the Party, transforming the economic model, promoting new productive forces, such as digital transformation, green transformation, energy transformation, and environmental protection.
The situation in Malaysia has been basically stable in recent years. The government of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim focuses on strengthening solidarity, ensuring social justice and creating conditions for economic development. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has put forward an initiative and also a new economic strategy called “Madani Economy:
Empowering the People”, with a long-term vision of Malaysia's position in the world economy. Malaysia implements an independent, non-aligned and non-alliance foreign policy, with three main pillars: valuing relations with ASEAN countries, balancing relations with major countries and close, close cooperation with countries in the Muslim community and the Commonwealth. Malaysia is a prestigious country in many international and regional organizations, such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement, and the United Nations. Malaysia will assume the responsibility of ASEAN Chair in 2025.
Vietnam and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1973. The relationship between the two countries has developed well in all areas, especially after the establishment of the Strategic Partnership in 2015. Malaysia is an important strategic partner in Southeast Asia and a priority in Vietnam's foreign policy. Our Party has positive relations with major political parties in Malaysia, such as the People's Justice Party (PKR) led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the United Malays National Organization (UMNO).
In recent times, the two sides have regularly exchanged high-level delegations and delegations at all levels. Economic and trade relations between the two countries have developed positively. Malaysia is currently Vietnam's second largest trade and investment partner in ASEAN. Vietnam is Malaysia's third largest trade partner in ASEAN with bilateral trade turnover reaching 12.7 billion USD in 2023.
Cooperation between the two countries in various fields such as defense-security, labor, education, culture, tourism, people-to-people exchange, etc. has achieved many positive results. In addition, the two countries closely coordinate at multilateral organizations and forums, including ASEAN; sharing strategic views and interests in most regional and international issues.
In the context of the two countries having just celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and looking forward to the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Strategic Partnership, the official visit to Malaysia by General Secretary To Lam and his wife will mark another important milestone in the bilateral relationship, contributing to consolidating the foundation of political trust between the two countries at a high level. The visit affirms the consistent policy of the Party and State to always attach importance to relations with countries in the region, including Malaysia.
Building on the positive developments in the Vietnam-Malaysia Strategic Partnership, the visit of General Secretary To Lam and his wife will create momentum to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries, thereby contributing to promoting the achievement of each country's development goals. The visit affirms that Vietnam is actively and responsibly working with Malaysia and ASEAN member countries to build a united and strong ASEAN Community, maintain the central role of the Association, and contribute to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
