According to The Star, the state of Penang (Malaysia) has deployed a smart monitoring system called “Trace and Trace” to ensure the authenticity and quality of durian, a local specialty fruit. The system was introduced ahead of the Penang Fruit and Durian Festival, scheduled to be held from June 23 to July 20 at the Persiaran Queensbay area, Bayan Lepas.

Fahmi Zainol, head of the Cooperative Development, Agricultural Technology and Food Security Committee, said about 60 farmers had agreed to join the smart tagging system, which began on June 1, with 20 large farms having completed registration. “Farmers need to register themselves and provide documents proving legal ownership of the land. Applications through third parties will not be accepted,” he said at an event in Komtar.

The system is designed to prevent durians from other regions from being mislabeled as Penang, thus protecting the reputation of local durians. Mr Fahmi encouraged farmers to participate to ensure transparency and enhance brand value. The upcoming festival will be an opportunity to promote the unique qualities of Penang durians, while also helping small-scale farmers access markets and increase their income.

The initiative is part of Penang’s larger plan to develop agri- tourism , turning the area into an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists. Each durian from Penang will be tagged with a QR code, allowing consumers to easily check the product’s origin by scanning the code.

The state government is also considering making the tagging system mandatory. Participating farmers will be given priority in receiving support from extension programmes, promotional events and other government initiatives.
