Occurring on average every 2 to 7 years, El Nino is a climate phenomenon marked by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean near the equator.
Depending on its strength, El Nino can cause more extreme impacts than normal, such as increasing the risk of heavy rains and droughts in some parts of the world , said Michelle L'Heureux, a climate scientist at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center. El Nino can also lead to new temperature records in areas that are heavily affected by the weather phenomenon.
El Nino's influence on the United States weakens during the summer and becomes more pronounced from late fall through spring. In the winter, there is an 84% chance of a stronger-than-average El Nino and a 56% chance of a strong El Nino.
In the past 3 years, the world has been affected by the La Nina phenomenon (heavy rain). Therefore, many experts are concerned that this year's El Nino phenomenon will be quite unpredictable and at least moderate in intensity. The appearance of El Nino (hot and dry weather) will greatly affect socio-economic activities, especially agricultural production, leading to negative impacts on global food prices.
For Vietnam, especially the rice, shrimp, fish, and vegetable granary of the Mekong Delta, the amount of water flowing from the upstream region to the Mekong River will likely decrease sharply due to drought and increased water storage by upstream hydroelectric dams.
