In an interview with CNBC , the Tesla boss shared that he was the one who came up with the name OpenAI. He also played an important role in recruiting the company's key scientists and engineers.
Musk was one of OpenAI’s first backers, pledging $1 billion before pulling out over disagreements over the startup’s growth. He has said he contributed somewhere around $50 million. He also believes OpenAI is not paying enough attention to safe AI research, and he signed an open letter calling for a moratorium on AI development until common standards are established.
However, Musk himself invested in OpenAI's rival – X.AI – in April.
Musk has repeatedly said that Microsoft controls OpenAI and that the startup’s for-profit model is questionable, a claim CEO Satya Nadella has said is completely untrue.
“As much as I have great respect for Elon and what he’s doing, I can only say that this is not true,” Nadella told CNBC . He said Microsoft and OpenAI only have a commercial partnership.
OpenAI was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit. The startup’s structure changed in 2019 when two senior executives announced the creation of a for-profit entity called OpenAI LP. Microsoft announced an investment in ChatGPT developer in January, marking the third phase of the partnership. The Windows maker has been integrating OpenAI technology like GPT-4 into its products and services in recent months.
According to Nadella, AI development is happening rapidly but it is important for Microsoft to take advantage of the technology and its potential. He also feels that AI is on the right track.
