On the opening day of the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil on November 10, participating countries reached a consensus in principle on choosing Ethiopia as the host country for the COP32 event in 2027, held in the capital Addis Ababa.

The confirmation was made by COP30 President André Corrêa do Lago. The decision must be formally approved on Tuesday. Ethiopia launched its candidacy in September, competing with Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the selection of the host country for COP31 in 2026 is still ongoing, with both Australia and Turkey competing fiercely. Australia is said to have an advantage thanks to its cooperation with Pacific island nations - the countries most affected by climate change.

COP summits are held on a rotating basis between regions. This year's conference, COP30, is taking place in Belém, Brazil, which is located in the Amazon region.

President Corrêa do Lago has called on countries in the group to resolve their differences quickly. He said if the deadlock continues, COP31 should be held in Bonn, Germany, home to the UN Climate Agency.
