This is the first time in 18 years that a Spanish monarch has visited Beijing, marking an important step in efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries.
The trip comes as Madrid seeks to expand its economic and political influence in Asia, while relations with the US are showing signs of cracks.

The visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of high-level relations between the two countries. The main objective is to strengthen trade and investment cooperation and create a balance in Spain's foreign policy.
According to the ICEX trade agency, in 2024 Spain will import 45 billion euros of goods from China, while exports will reach only 7.5 billion euros.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has visited China three times in the past three years to try to narrow this gap. King Felipe’s visit to Beijing is seen as a continuation of the “trade balance” strategy that the country is pursuing.
Last December, Madrid hosted the first international edition of the Imperial Springs Forum (ISIF) – an event dubbed “China’s Davos” – which observers said showed growing trust between the two sides, while many European countries remain cautious towards Beijing.
According to expert Alicia García-Herrero of the Bruegel research institute (Belgium), the Spanish left-wing government is viewing relations with China as a "preventive strategy" against the risk of tension with the US.
“China can offer an alternative investment option. It makes economic sense, but it is also a political move,” said Alicia.
US President Donald Trump has threatened to punish Spain for failing to meet NATO defense spending levels and for differing views with Washington on the Gaza conflict.
