Meet the builder of the "flying block house" | Project

This project was designed by Architect Nguyen Van Thien (TAA Design Company) and constructed by Dori Construction Company Limited (Doricons). Reporter of Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper had an interview with Mr. Truong Dinh Thi, Director of Doricons, to learn more about the project.

- It is known that the "flying block house" constructed by Doricons is a quite unique architecture in Vietnam. Could you please tell us about the project's construction techniques?

- Cat Vang Hostel is a hotel project that the investor is very passionate about, looking for a reputable designer to have the most perfect project. Therefore, with its reputation and responsibility, Doricons has tried its best to satisfy the investor.

Accordingly, for projects with large static loads, dynamic loads and strong winds typical of coastal areas, we give special priority to geological surveys. To obtain optimal foundation solutions and save costs for investors. The proposed pile construction method is directional drilling combined with reinforced concrete pile pressing, loading to reach the required load.

The project is designed with a suspended garden system in contact with nature on 3 sides. The balconies span 2.2m creating a sense of freedom. The interesting architecture is also a challenge for the construction team and we have come up with many solutions to meet the specific architectural shapes.

The formwork systems are custom-made by Doricons for the free-standing balcony system according to each separate, staggered module. The reinforced concrete hanging wall system constructed in phase 2 is a unique formwork system that we have developed. To ensure connection with the balcony and no cracks during the construction period. With the planter wall system, we propose using the reinforced concrete method to ensure waterproofing.

- Is engineering different from normal construction? Are construction materials easy to find and buy? What are the costs?

- Cat Vang Hostel is characterized by a suspended garden system that is in contact with nature on three sides, with green space covering the building. Along with it comes the challenge of structural durability. We also treat the waterproofing and drainage for the hanging garden system very differently, meticulously and focusing on optimal techniques. We use 2-component waterproofing combined with fiberglass, and a drainage system specifically manufactured for the rooftop garden.

As for the finishing part of the project, we pay attention to the surface. The finishing part of the project is constructed by us with Terraco paint, and is manually plastered for the entire project, to ensure the "feel" of the surface of the project. We also construct separately according to the pattern that the investor wants, so when constructing, we make samples before mass construction.

- What is the potential for implementing projects like this in Vietnam, sir? Will it attract many other homeowners and investors?

- For urban life increasingly polluted by dust and noise, nature-oriented projects are the future trend. This is also a unique architectural direction that brings a highlight to the urban landscape. In the future, we will have more access to world architectural projects and Vietnam still has many opportunities to learn and implement new projects towards sustainable development.

- What advantages or points do these projects have that make them different from other projects? Are they aiming to be green projects, sir?

- The project uses finishing materials that are specifically manufactured for the project. During the construction process, it is guaranteed that no "fine dust" is generated like the way conventional water-based paint is used, so the surrounding environment is not polluted. In particular, when completed, the project will ensure adequate sunlight and wind.

The project site is divided into 4 blocks, not touching any adjacent space, creating a clear traffic path, and at the same time having gaps to increase natural ventilation. In addition, the project also combines the blocks extending far and large trees to create shade for the surface of the project. The "Flying Block House" is like a floating natural block, a design solution that the design and construction unit wishes to improve the quality of life for the complex above the city, aiming for green buildings, very meaningful for the environment and the people living in the project.

- So, in your opinion, is the construction investment cost higher than a normal construction investment project? Do you encourage or advise people to participate, and why? What is unique about the projects that Doricon is participating in?

- The project cost was set by the investor from the first day of approaching the project and we provided solutions to save costs during construction, so the investment is completely reasonable and not higher than other projects. As someone who has faith and has oriented from the beginning for project investors to participate in construction towards green buildings, we really like to implement projects like this.

We always encourage and are eager to participate in the construction of projects with architectural designs and the use of environmentally friendly materials that emit little pollution during the construction process.

The projects we are constructing from the West, the Central region, or Ho Chi Minh City, all have their own regional characteristics and are closely linked to the cultural memories of that place, and each project has its own life that is inseparable from the urban memories of that place.

We hope that with Doricons' small contribution, we will bring more unique projects, and contribute new construction solutions towards green projects, good for the environment and living space for homeowners as well as everyone around.

Architect Nguyen Van Thien: "Flying Block House" - Meaningful Green Building

Cat Vang Hostel project is a residential complex for experts living and working in Phu My town, where there are many heavy industrial factories and container ports, with many pollution problems due to rapid industrial development…

Therefore, improving the quality of the living environment is the focus of the project. The idea of creating "floating natural blocks" or "flying block houses" with a size of 2-3m wide enough to accommodate a variety of outdoor activities such as a garden or a playground above, connected to each living space to bring an experience with nature, relaxing after a day of work in the factory in the industrial park.

The blocks are arranged staggered to create open spaces for trees to grow, while creating an improvised rhythm on the facade.

The ground plan is divided into 4 blocks, with traffic routes that also serve as air vents to increase natural ventilation. The combination of far-reaching blocks and large trees creates shade for the building's surface.

"Flying block house" is a design solution that aims to improve the quality of life for high-rise complexes in urban areas that I believe will attract many investors in the near future.
