Geely Galaxy Cruiser - Off-road SUV that can swim for 2 hours on water

The new Geely Galaxy Cruiser off-road SUV launched in China has a design similar to the Land Rover Defender and many technologies similar to BYD vehicles.

At the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show that opened last week, Geely unveiled an impressive new concept car called the new Geely Galaxy Cruiser 2026. According to Geely, this is a car ready for off-roading.

China’s largest private automaker appears to be making a serious entry into the country’s booming off-road market, with the Galaxy Cruiser, a boxy design that’s a departure from Geely’s signature design language, proving it.

All the familiar elements of off-road vehicles are present on the Geely Galaxy Cruiser, from the square front end, thick silver front bumper, square wheel arches, flat roof, sturdy roof rack, vertical interior compartment to the spare tire located on the rear trunk door.

The concept even comes with a roof ladder and side storage boxes, both of which have been popularized by the Land Rover Defender. From the front, the car features a rectangular grille that extends to both sides, integrated with round headlights that Geely describes as “ancient wisdom.”

The reason is that this cluster of lights, along with the vertical taillights, is inspired by the Armillary sphere - an ancient astronomical instrument. The angular design language continues inside the cockpit, where the Galaxy Cruiser has many rectangular details reminiscent of BYD's Fangchengbao line.

This can be seen in the dashboard, horn and function keys on the steering wheel. The large floating infotainment screen, the switches on the center console and even the driving mode selector wheel are also designed in a similar style.

The Geely Galaxy Cruiser SUV 's gearshift is inspired by the throttle of a yacht. Meanwhile, the passenger side is equipped with additional off-road support equipment such as a compass. However, these equipment may not appear on the commercial version of the Galaxy Cruiser because they may interfere with the operation of the airbags.

Geely says the Galaxy Cruiser can drive sideways like a crab, turn in place like a tank, and even run on three wheels. It will likely use a hydraulic suspension system similar to BYD, allowing one wheel to be lifted when a tire is flat.

Not only that, the car can also drift without a driver and pass the Moose test at speeds up to 80 km/h. In addition, it can wade through 800 mm deep water and float on water for up to 2 hours at speeds up to 8.5 km/h, similar to BYD's luxury SUV Yangwang U8.

Since the Galaxy Cruiser is a futuristic concept, Geely has not revealed specifics about its powertrain. However, the company said the car will be able to switch between all-electric, hybrid, and range-extending modes thanks to AI technology. It is expected that the car will be equipped with a plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) system.

In addition, the Galaxy Cruiser also uses an Aegis battery developed in-house by Geely, along with a satellite communication system and G-AES continuous automatic obstacle avoidance technology. The system will use remote satellite sensors and drones to detect the path and avoid obstacles when going off-road.

Although it is a concept car, the Galaxy Cruiser has a design that is ready for commercial production. Therefore, the car may soon appear in showrooms in China in the near future. The price of the commercial version of the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 2026 has not been announced.
