On the afternoon of August 16, the Steering Committee for Digital Transformation of the Ministry of Education and Training held a conference on "Application of data science and artificial intelligence in education and training".
The education sector is the most affected but also benefits a lot.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son stated that education is one of the sectors most affected by digital transformation in general and artificial intelligence (AI) in particular; but at the same time, it is also the sector that benefits the most.
Not only applying artificial intelligence (in management, teaching, etc.), the education sector also participates in human resource development, research to create technologies and products in this field.
The Deputy Minister affirmed that for education, AI is both an opportunity and a big challenge. If we do not research to apply it effectively, we will fall behind. On the contrary, urgent research and appropriate approaches will lead to effective and less costly implementation, "in the field of education, we need to start right away".
According to the Deputy Minister, to effectively implement digital transformation, there must be data, continuously updated and supplemented; along with that, it is necessary to research mechanisms and policies; pay attention to training teachers and managers; equip knowledge and guide the exploitation and use of tools for students of a certain age, at different levels.
At the same time, we must also consider the research problem, linked with other research in the industry to continue to have new products on artificial intelligence to serve in management and teaching.
GenAI can help teachers "unlock" their potential
At the conference, experts discussed and exchanged about the impact of data science and artificial intelligence in education and how to best exploit artificial intelligence in education.
Sharing about AI applications in teaching support, Dr. Tran Viet Hung, founder and Chairman of Got It, Inc., a technology startup in Silicon Valley; founder of STEAM for Vietnam organization affirmed: GenAI can help teachers "unlock" their potential.
Specifically, teachers can be supported by GenAI in generating ideas; planning detailed lessons; grading and providing detailed comments for each student; assisting and tutoring students, translating content into other languages; creating rich and personalized teaching content.
Commenting that the application of GenAI in teaching in Vietnam is still new and mainly due to teachers proactively approaching it at the individual level, Dr. Tran Viet Hung said that teachers are very excited about learning new knowledge and have more or less applied it to their daily work.
Affirming that teaching can be improved thanks to artificial intelligence, Dr. Bui Quoc Trung, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, recommended that Vietnam prepare to move towards individualizing education from primary to high school and improving the efficiency of university and postgraduate training through data analysis.
With the trend of online and lifelong learning, according to Dr. Bui Quoc Trung, it is necessary to promote online learning activities along with the application of big data analysis techniques to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
At the same time, Dr. Bui Quoc Trung proposed that the Ministry of Education and Training build online courses for common subjects of universities and other educational institutions; integrate data analysis tools to monitor, analyze and promote effective learning; publish courses and analysis for training units participating in the system.
There needs to be a critical approach to everything ChatGPT creates.
Giving an overview of AI and AI applications in education and training, Professor Ho Tu Bao, Director of the Data Science Laboratory of the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, Scientific Director of the BKAI Center mentioned GenAI, ChatGPT and said that ChatGPT does not understand the text it creates; it can and often creates inaccurate statements.
Therefore, researchers, teachers, and learners need to take a critical approach to everything ChatGPT produces.
Professor Ho Tu Bao noted that when integrating GenAI into education, we must think more carefully about what it means for learners to become what kind of people they will become in a digital world. At the same time, we need to thoroughly understand the potential of GenAI in education and clearly define the boundaries of AI in education.
Learners may become overly dependent on GenAI and limit the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. GenAI in education should be used with caution, prioritizing ethical considerations and strong safeguards to minimize potential harm.
Making a proposal, Professor Ho Tu Bao said that managers and teachers at all levels should use AI to improve operational efficiency. Higher education should use AI to better support vocational training. Ethical and legal education is needed to use AI safely and responsibly.
General education does not need to rush to use artificial AI, but needs to gradually introduce AI as recommended by UNESCO and the experience of some countries.
Improve policies and laws related to data sharing
Associate Professor Dr. Ta Hai Tung, Principal of the School of Information Technology and Communications, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said that connecting and sharing data is the trend of the times, the default, no longer an option; allowing for increased transparency, as well as accountability and creating momentum for socio-economic development through innovative activities.
Giving some recommendations for implementation in Vietnam, Associate Professor, Dr. Ta Hai Tung said that it is necessary to improve policies and laws related to data sharing.
At the same time, raise awareness and create motivation to enhance data sharing within state agencies and between state agencies and the private sector (reward mechanism). Develop a platform for accessing and sharing data to serve socio-economic development; quickly create a number of data mining products (enriched) with widespread impact, promote data sharing; develop human resources.
“For the education sector, openness is a principle, not an option, and should be at the forefront of sharing open data,” Associate Professor Dr. Ta Hai Tung emphasized.
