Domestic coffee prices on November 16, 2024 |
Last week, world and domestic coffee prices continued to increase, with Arabica prices reaching a 13-year high on November 15.
According to experts, this price increase is supported by concerns about adverse weather affecting supply in Brazil and the ongoing harvest in the Central Highlands provinces of Vietnam.
Recent storms have slowed Vietnam’s coffee harvest and rain remains a concern as buyers say the crop could shrink by up to 10%, to its lowest level in a decade.
According to the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Association (Cecafe), the country increased its exports in October 2024 by 10.5% compared to the same month last year, reaching a record 4.57 million bags. Of which, Arabica exports increased by 7% to 3.7 million bags, Robusta exports increased by 27% to 871,000 bags.
Meanwhile, coffee producers in Brazil are holding back coffee in hopes of higher prices. These optimistic expectations are fueled by uncertain prospects for the 2024-25 crop, which has been significantly affected by a months-long drought.
The Brazilian Real has depreciated against the US dollar, but coffee farmers in Brazil are restricting coffee supply to the market in the hope of higher prices in the future, which has tightened supply to the market and supported coffee prices to increase recently.
