In the first 7 months of the year, the country exported nearly 4.9 million tons of rice - earning 2.62 billion USD, up more than 20% in volume and 31.4% in value over the same period.
At this time, Vietnamese rice prices are at the top of the world. In yesterday's trading session (August 18), according to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam was 628 USD/ton.
This is the highest price in the world and is 16 USD/ton higher than the same quality rice from Thailand.
In addition to the standard 5% broken rice, the prices of fragrant rice, high-quality rice and 25% broken rice from both main sources decreased by 10 - 20 USD/ton, but remained high.

* In early August 2023, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed a Directive on ensuring national food security and promoting sustainable rice production and export in the current period.
In this directive, the Prime Minister requested the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to preside over and coordinate with the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment to direct localities to review planning orientations and develop large-scale, high-quality rice production areas, ensure land areas dedicated to rice cultivation, closely monitor weather, natural disasters, and epidemics to promptly adjust production, and ensure the production target of over 43 million tons of rice per year in the following years.
At the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shall preside over and coordinate with the Minister of Industry and Trade, Chairmen of People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities, and Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association to closely monitor developments in the regional and world rice market, the production situation, and rice output by type and season of the year to balance rice sources to serve domestic rice consumption and export needs, firmly ensuring national food security in all situations.
