Pig prices fall across the board, losing important milestone

* Pig prices in the Northern region decreased slightly, officially losing the important milestone of 60,000 VND/kg.

After reducing the price, traders in Thai Binh are purchasing live pigs at 59,000 VND/kg, equal to Bac Giang, Hung Yen, Thai Nguyen, Phu Tho, Thai Binh, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, and Tuyen Quang.

Other localities have no price adjustment and stand at 58,000 VND/kg.

Today's live pig price in the North is around 58,000 - 59,000 VND/kg.

* The live pig market in the Central and Central Highlands regions decreased by 1,000 VND/kg.

Of which, traders in Dak Lak province adjusted down 1,000 VND/kg to 55,000 VND/kg - equal to Binh Dinh.

After a price reduction, Binh Thuan province traded at 56,000 VND/kg.

57,000 VND/kg is the transaction price recorded in Thanh Hoa, down 1,000 VND/kg.

Currently, the purchase price of live pigs in the Central and Central Highlands regions is around 55,000 - 57,000 VND/kg.

* Pig price in the South decreased by 1,000 VND/kg in many localities.

Specifically, live pigs in Ho Chi Minh City were purchased at 55,000 VND/kg, down 1,000 VND/kg.

Dong Thap and Soc Trang provinces both reduced by 1,000 VND/kg to 56,000 VND/kg.

With the same price reduction, traders in Kien Giang and Ca Mau provinces purchased live pigs at VND57,000/kg and VND58,000/kg, respectively. The price of VND58,000/kg was also recorded in Bac Lieu. This is also the highest price in the region.

The price of live pigs in the Southern region today is around 55,000 - 58,000 VND/kg.

* According to the Department of Animal Husbandry, currently, the structure of live pig output accounts for 63.8% of the total domestic meat production. Therefore, the price of live pig not only directly affects the income of farmers but also affects consumers and impacts the CPI index of the whole country.

The average monthly selling price of live pigs decreased from January 2023 (VND 51,800/kg) to March (VND 49,000/kg), then increased sharply from May to July (VND 61,000/kg) and then decreased slightly; the price in August 2023 reached an average of VND 59,000/kg, a decrease of VND 2,000 - 3,000/kg compared to the price at the peak.

Comparing the corresponding months of 2022 and 2023, the price of live pigs in 2023 differs from 400 VND to 6,600 VND/kg compared to 2022.

Specifically, the price of live pigs for slaughter in the first 5 months of 2023 was lower than the same period in 2022. In June alone, the price of pigs in 2023 was 3,300 VND/kg higher than in 2022.

The highest price of live pigs in 2023 was in July (average 61,000 VND/kg), 4,600 VND/kg lower than the same period in 2022; in August 2023, the average price of live pigs was 59,000 VND/kg, 6,600 VND/kg lower than in August 2022.

In August, there was a time when Vietnam's live pig price (average 59,500 VND/kg) ranked 2nd in the world after the Philippines (over 69,000 VND/kg), ranked 3rd was China (57,000 VND/kg), ranked 4th was Spain (52,000 VND/kg).
