On Monday, the U.S. and China announced they had reached an interim deal after talks in Geneva over the weekend. The two sides agreed to suspend tariffs for 90 days and reduce tariffs from more than 100 basis points to a base rate of 10%.
“The easing of tensions between the US and China will help limit the negative economic impact if the trade war continues, thereby bringing a better demand outlook for the oil market,” said analyst Ole Hansen from Saxo Bank.
The Geneva meetings marked the first face-to-face meeting between senior US and Chinese economic officials since President Donald Trump returned to power and unleashed a series of tariffs on global trading partners. Positive exchanges between the world’s two largest economies could help revive bilateral trade, boosting global oil demand.
Callum Macpherson, head of commodities at Investec, said: “Although it is still early days, the fact that the two sides reached a consensus over the weekend is a positive sign rather than a lack of agreement. So it is no surprise that oil prices are rising.”
Both oil benchmarks rose more than 4% last week, after the US signed a trade deal with the UK – a move that raised investor hopes that economic disruption from US tariffs could be limited.
