Oil prices edged up at the end of the week’s final trading session (May 23) as US buyers hedged positions ahead of the three-day Memorial Day holiday and amid concerns over the latest round of nuclear talks between the US and Iran.
According to Reuters, Memorial Day falls on May 26 this year (the last Monday in May). The three-day holiday (from May 24) kicks off the summer driving season in the US, when fuel demand is typically at its highest of the year.
US and Iranian negotiators met in Rome on May 23 for a new round of talks aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear program, but there was no sign of progress toward a deal. Traders fear that crude supplies could be disrupted if talks fail to reach a deal, as this could further stoke geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
According to experts, the oil market is currently under pressure from two factors, including the expected impact of global trade on oil demand and the move by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC +) to increase supply again this summer.
OPEC+ meets next week and is expected to increase production by 411,000 barrels per day in July. The group could cancel the remainder of its voluntary production cut of 2.2 million barrels per day at the end of October, after having increased its production target by about 1 million barrels per day for three months (April, May, June).
