"High-rise Building" Model - Solution to prevent African swine fever
The model of raising pigs in "apartments" or high-rise farms is proving to be extremely effective, especially in the context of the complicated developments of African swine fever (ASF). A typical example is Hoang Long Cooperative (Hanoi) of Mr. Nguyen Trong Long.
The high-rise farm helps isolate the pigs from the outside environment, minimizing the risk of disease transmission. Mr. Long shared that with strict hygiene procedures (workers walk on lime water, clothes are soaked in disinfectant daily), his farm is still safe despite ASF outbreaks in many places.
This model allows raising 4,000 pigs on a limited area of land, requiring only 8 workers to operate. This helps optimize space and save labor costs.
The closed design and strict control process help to effectively manage the environment and diseases, ensuring biosecurity for the entire farm.
This model has received attention from management agencies. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment proposed to the Prime Minister to pilot a multi-storey pig farming model for replication in Vietnam.
China, a major pig-raising country, has also successfully applied this model with more than 2,000 high-rise farms, raising millions of pigs each year, proving its feasibility and efficiency on a large scale.
