While domestic durian prices have yet to recover, export markets – especially China – continue to be important variables influencing prices.
According to the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the country is entering the main season and preparing to increase durian exports to China. However, the customs clearance process still faces many challenges:
China tightens quality control, especially on the synthetic dye Basic Yellow 2 (BY2) – which was found in some shipments of Thai durian.
There are only nine laboratories in Thailand accredited by GACC (General Administration of Customs of China) to test exported durian.
Thailand is asking China to reinstate a laboratory in Chachoengsao to its approved list.
In addition, Thailand and China have agreed to operate 24/7 at border checkpoints, increase human resources and inspection equipment, and consider applying fast-track customs procedures to ensure durian flows are not congested during peak times.
Comment: During peak season, prices will vary greatly depending on quality.
The sharp drop in durian prices reflects the high supply pressure during the main season, while exports still face many obstacles. Businesses and farmers need to pay attention to standardizing harvesting, packaging and testing processes to ensure export capacity, especially when China is raising food safety standards.
However, the beautiful varieties that meet GAP standards and have clear growing area codes still maintain good appeal in high-end markets. If domestic consumption is more stable, the price level may improve by the end of the month.
