Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery fell 11 yuan to 3,127 yuan a tonne.
Iron ore futures fell, pressured by rumors of Chinese crude steel output cuts and conflicting statements from US and Chinese officials on trade talks.
The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 0.7% to 709 yuan ($97.20) a tonne.
Benchmark iron ore for May delivery on the Singapore Exchange fell 0.07% to $98.35 a tonne.
Markets continue to be abuzz with talk that China is planning to cut crude steel production by 50 million tonnes this year, putting pressure on steelmaking raw material prices and pushing steel prices higher.
Baoshan Iron & Steel, China’s largest listed steelmaker, said there was a high possibility of crude steel output cuts this year, although cuts were unlikely in April and May.
Wu Wenzhang, chairman of consultancy Steelhome, said that China's steel supply and demand will return to balance if crude steel output this year falls by more than 50 million tons compared to last year.
Wu also forecasts that steel consumption in 2025 will decrease by about 30 million tons compared to 2024, while steel exports will decrease by 15-25 million tons this year.
In a related development, India has urged its companies to seek acquisition of iron ore and coking coal assets abroad to enhance supply security.
Meanwhile, conflicting signals from US President Donald Trump and China on trade talks have added to market volatility.
On Sunday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not confirm US President Donald Trump's claim that talks with China were taking place, while China had previously denied reports of talks.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE also posted declines, with metallurgical coal and coking coal down 1.25% and 1.27%, respectively.
Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were little changed. Rebar rose 0.42% and hot-rolled coil rose 0.81%, while wire rod fell 0.54% and stainless steel fell about 0.1%.
