Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for December 2025 delivery rose 16 yuan to 2,971 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures rebounded in the latest session as some investors closed short positions to lock in profits after the recent decline. However, expectations of a seasonal slowdown in demand continued to limit price gains.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 1.37 percent to 704.5 yuan ($97.98) a tonne after hitting a near two-month low in the previous session.

On the Singapore Exchange, the benchmark iron ore contract for July delivery (SZZFN5) also rose 0.95% to $95.2 a tonne.

According to Steven Yu, senior analyst at consultancy Mysteel, prices have fallen sharply in recent days, causing futures prices to be lower than spot prices, which suggests that further declines are limited in the short term.

“That prompted some short sellers to take profits, especially as hot metal production is expected to hover around 2.4 million tonnes in June. Prices could fall further if fundamentals deteriorate more markedly,” Yu said.

Average daily hot metal output – a key indicator of iron ore demand – fell 0.7% week-on-week to 2.42 million tonnes as of May 30, Mysteel data showed, but was still 2.6% higher than the same period last year.

Pei Hao, senior analyst at international brokerage Freight Investor Services, said the recovery in iron ore prices was partly supported by a sharp rise in coking coal and coking coal prices.

On the DCE, coking coal and coke prices (DCJcv1) rose 7.19% and 5.72% respectively, after hitting their lowest in nearly nine years earlier this week.

Some analysts said expectations of lower coal supplies had spurred buying. “We closed all our short positions today,” said a coal trader in Singapore.

In line with the iron ore market, steel contracts on the Shanghai Futures Exchange all rose, with rebar up 1.57%, hot-rolled coil up 1.61%, wire rod (SWRcv1) up 1.14%, and stainless steel up 0.59%.
