Currently, localities are entering the final stages of the pepper harvest. Sunny weather helps with harvesting, drying and preserving. However, the rapidly increasing supply is putting pressure on the market.

However, this year’s pepper output is expected to be lower than last year due to prolonged drought in major growing regions such as the Central Highlands and the Southeast. Although some recent rains have helped ease the drought, they have significantly affected the differentiation of flower buds in harvested gardens, putting the yield of next year at risk of decline.

Despite the decrease in output, pepper growers are still assured thanks to stable prices. This year, even during the peak harvest season, domestic pepper prices are still fluctuating around 150,000 VND/kg. This is different from previous years, when prices often dropped sharply during the harvest season due to increased supply. The reason is that farmers this year are not under much financial pressure, so they are more inclined to keep their goods and only sell them when needed.

Taking advantage of the 90-day US tax suspension, many Vietnamese businesses have signed new export contracts. At the same time, demand for pepper from emerging markets such as the Middle East and Africa is increasing rapidly, opening up great opportunities to expand market share.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), the increase in pepper export prices is a positive sign, motivating businesses to upgrade quality and expand their product portfolio. The current trend is to shift to organic pepper lines, which can be traced to their origins and meet sustainability standards. This is a mandatory requirement if Vietnam wants to maintain its competitive advantage and assert its position in the global market.

VPSA forecasts that pepper exports will face many difficulties in the second quarter. High pepper prices put import-export businesses under great financial pressure. In addition, US tax policies can change unexpectedly, making signing long-term orders more risky at the present time.
