The lasting value of the August Revolution

The August Revolution of 1945 was a momentous event in the history of the Vietnamese nation, opening the era of national independence and socialism. 80 years have passed, but the values that the August Revolution brought remain intact, a great motivation for our people to enter a new era. Reporters of Nghe An Newspaper, Radio and Television had an interview with Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hong - Chairman of Nghe An Historical Science Association about the everlasting values of the August Revolution.

PV: Sir, why is the August Revolution affirmed to be an epochal turning point for the Vietnamese people?

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hong: The August Revolution is affirmed to be an epochal turning point for the Vietnamese people, or in other words, the success of the August Revolution in 1945 opened a new turning point for the Vietnamese people.

First of all, the August Revolution put an end to the feudal regime and colonial rule for more than 80 years: For the first time in modern history, our people escaped the situation of “being oppressed by both French colonialists and Japanese fascists”. The collapse of the feudal-colonial ruling apparatus marked the complete disintegration of the old regime.

Furthermore, the August Revolution succeeded, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born, affirming the right to independence and freedom and opening a new era: the Vietnamese people rose from slavery to become masters of the country. This was a historical turning point because for the first time, the people were the subjects of political power.

The victory of the August Revolution also proved that, with the correct leadership of the Party and the strength of the great national unity bloc, a small country that had been under long-term occupation could still win against powerful forces. This is a living proof of the truth: “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom”.

At the same time, this victory also had the significance of strongly encouraging the national liberation movement in Asia, Africa and Latin America, contributing to weakening the colonial system of imperialism after World War II.

PV: Many researchers believe that the August Revolution was not only an event of national liberation, but also laid the foundation for many modern values of Vietnam. What is your assessment of this assessment?

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hong: This is a big issue that has been researched and discussed by many scientists. Personally, I would like to discuss the following 3 contents:

Firstly, the August Revolution built a great national unity bloc, which was the key factor that decided the victory of the revolution. The great strength of the great national unity bloc demonstrated the high consensus and unanimity of all classes of people, ethnic groups, classes, intellectuals, etc. under the leadership of the Indochinese Communist Party and the Viet Minh Front in the struggle, determined to seize power.

This is the solid foundation for all revolutions of our nation and the practice of the past 80 years has affirmed the value of this foundation.

Second, we must mention the leadership role of the Party and the Viet Minh Front. The wise and talented leadership of the Indochinese Communist Party was the decisive factor for the victory of the revolution. This is an important foundation of immutable value in the history of our country since the birth of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

The victory of the August Revolution affirmed the Party's role in determining the correct path to national liberation, uniting the entire nation's forces and appropriate methods of struggle to create a combined strength to win.

Third, the success of the August Revolution has brought great confidence to our people. That is confidence in the leadership of the Party, in the ability of the Vietnamese people to liberate themselves and decide their own destiny, and in the strength of the great national unity bloc in today's era.

Currently, our country is implementing a revolution to streamline the apparatus and many other policies. The foundation of belief in the victory of the August Revolution will encourage our country to succeed.

PV : In your opinion, what great lessons from the August Revolution are still valuable for the current cause of national construction and protection?

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hong: After 80 years of the victory of the August Revolution in 1945, we have had many comprehensive research works, in-depth analysis, drawing lessons from the August Revolution and all of those lessons are still valuable today.

In the context of this conversation, I would like to emphasize the following two lessons:

Firstly, the lesson on building, consolidating and promoting the strength of the great national unity bloc: The victory of the August Revolution has strongly demonstrated in practice the great role and strength of the masses in the revolution.

In the current cause of building and defending the Fatherland, we continue to strengthen the strength of the great national unity bloc. Ensure the widespread practice of democracy associated with strengthening discipline, solidarity and consensus among the people.

Currently, our country is carrying out a revolution to streamline the apparatus from the central to local levels. In just a short time, under the leadership of the Party, the drastic participation of the central and local ministries and branches has created a very high consensus, from the cadres to the people. Up to now, although there are still certain difficulties, we have completed the revolution to streamline the apparatus.

Second, build a truly clean and strong Party in terms of politics, ideology, organization and morality to lead the country. As we all know, when we carried out the August Revolution, our Party only had nearly 5,000 members, but each member was truly a shining example to the people.

Therefore, nearly 5,000 party members called on millions of members of the Viet Minh Front and the whole nation to unite into a bloc to create great strength.

Currently, our Party has about 5.6 million members. To affirm the Party's leadership role and prestige before the people, from the lessons of the August Revolution, the Party must constantly build the Party in terms of politics, ideology; organization, apparatus and cadres; build the ethics of exemplary, honest Party members, and have close relations with the people. We must promote the study and following of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style in a substantial manner.

PV: As the hometown of President Ho Chi Minh and a land rich in revolutionary tradition, in your opinion, what role and mark did Nghe An play in the process leading to the success of the August Revolution in 1945, as well as promoting the timeless significance of this event today?

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hong : Nghe An is the starting point of many patriotic and revolutionary movements, right after the Nghe An Provincial Communist Party of Vietnam was established in March 1930, carrying out the 1930-1931 revolutionary movement, culminating in the Nghe Tinh Soviet.

Thus, Nghe An was one of the first places where the national liberation revolution took place, and that revolution became a rehearsal for the August Revolution.

Promoting the tradition of patriotism and revolution, over the past 80 years, the Party Committee and people of Nghe An have made great contributions to the country and to the Soviet homeland. That was the contribution in the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism.

After the two successful resistance wars, Nghe An had more than 45,000 martyrs sacrificed on the battlefields and tens of thousands of people with lifelong disabilities... After the war, Nghe An had 158 groups and 73 individuals awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the State and thousands of groups and individuals were awarded noble medals and orders.

During the renovation period, Nghe An, from a purely agricultural province with a low starting point, has now built a solid socio-economic foundation. In recent years, the province's growth rate has been higher than the national average, reaching 9.01% in 2024, ranking 2nd in the North Central region and 13th in the country.

The economic scale is expanding, reaching more than 144,523 billion VND in 2020 and more than 216,943 billion VND in 2024. Social security is ensured, administrative reform and digital transformation have initially achieved remarkable results. National defense, security and social order and safety are ensured, people's lives are constantly improving...
