World gold price developments in the past 24 hours.
According to Reuters, world gold prices eased their decline as bets on the US Federal Reserve (Fed) cutting interest rates increased after US first-quarter growth data was weaker than expected.
Spot gold fell 0.2% to $3,308.52 an ounce by 10:57 a.m. ET (1457 GMT). The precious metal had fallen more than 1% earlier in the session, but was still on track for a fourth straight monthly gain, up 6% so far in April. U.S. gold futures fell 0.5% to $3,318.50.
Data showed US gross domestic product (GDP) fell at an annualized rate of 0.3% last quarter, as businesses rushed to import goods in anticipation of tariffs from the Trump administration.
“Gold is still confident in a bull market and today’s data suggests an easier path for the Fed to start cutting rates, which will be positive for gold,” said Tai Wong, an independent metals trader, adding that gold could trade sideways for a bit given its recent strong rally to $3,500.
Traders are betting that clearer signs of a weakening economy in June will prompt the Fed to resume rate cuts, eventually cutting them by a total of one percentage point by year-end. The non-yielding precious metal, a hedge against political and financial uncertainty, also thrives in a low-rate environment. It last hit a record high of $3,500.05 an ounce on April 22.
Meanwhile, the US personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index was unchanged in March after rising 0.4% in February. The quarterly PCE excluding the volatile food and energy components rose at a 3.5% pace, faster than the 2.6% pace in the fourth quarter of last year.
“Gold has so far ignored the lowest core PCE reading since the pandemic, largely due to the previous sharp rally following the unexpected decline in US GDP,” Wong said.
Traders now await the biggest jobs data of the week, the US monthly jobs report on Friday, which could shed more light on the Fed's interest rate outlook.
Spot silver fell 0.9% to $32.68 an ounce, platinum fell 1.1% to $966.74 and palladium fell 0.1% to $933.50.
