Spot gold prices fell slightly as U.S. financial markets closed for the Juneteenth holiday. U.S. gold futures also fell 0.7% to $3,382.80 an ounce. The rising dollar makes dollar-denominated metals more expensive for investors holding other currencies.

Analysts say the gold market is currently being driven by two conflicting factors. On the one hand, gold’s safe-haven status has been boosted by the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. On the other hand, the prospect of higher US interest rates is weighing on gold prices because the precious metal does not yield interest.

“The Fed has shown that they are still concerned about inflation risks, which reduces the possibility of further rate cuts, and this creates a headwind for gold prices,” said Soni Kumari, a commodity strategist at ANZ Bank.

In fact, the Fed decided to keep interest rates unchanged at its meeting on Wednesday. While still forecasting a total of half a percentage point rate cuts this year, policymakers were more cautious about emerging economic risks. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell also warned against reading too much into the rosy forecasts, noting that significant inflation risks remain, especially in the context of possible US import tariffs.

In addition to gold, the precious metals market today saw a clear correction in platinum. The metal fell 3.7% to $1,269.30 an ounce, just hours after soaring to its highest level since September 2014.

According to expert Kumari, this sudden price increase is mainly due to technical factors: “When prices surpass important psychological levels such as $ 1,000 / ounce, investors and speculators often buy massively. But such rapid increases are often not based on solid fundamentals and are prone to profit-taking.”

Similarly, palladium prices also fell nearly 1.1% to $1,038.56 an ounce, while silver fell 1.4% to $36.21 an ounce.

The precious metals market is currently a stark reflection of the tug-of-war between geopolitical uncertainty, interest rate expectations, and short-term investor sentiment. With uncertainty still looming, analysts say investors need to be cautious, especially with volatile assets like gold and platinum.
