With its economical design philosophy, low cost of operation and simple maintenance, Gripen is considered one of the most effective light fighters today, fulfilling both air combat and reconnaissance missions at the same time. The highlight of this fighter is its outstanding durability, with a fuselage life of more than 10,000 flight hours, many times higher than the Su-27SK, Su-30MK2 and significantly better than the first generation F-16.
The optimized aerodynamic design allows the Gripen to climb almost vertically at an angle of 70 - 80 degrees while still maintaining its attack capability, while the modern Ericsson radar allows detection and tracking of multiple targets at the same time.

Gripen is 14.1 m long, has a wingspan of 8.4 m, is 4.5 m high; weighs 6.6 tons empty and has a maximum takeoff weight of 14 tons. The Volvo RM12 jet engine helps the aircraft reach a speed of up to 2,450 km/h, a range of 3,250 km and a ceiling of 16 km. Gripen's combat capabilities are very flexible with 6 hardpoints carrying a variety of weapons from 27 mm Mauser BK 27 cannons to air-to-air, air-to-ground missiles, anti-radar missiles, anti-ship missiles, rockets and guided bombs.
Another special advantage of Gripen is the advanced electronic system that allows four aircraft in the same squadron to share battlefield data in real time, helping to increase the effectiveness of joint operations and improve airspace control capabilities.

The JAS 39 Gripen fighter has many variants developed in each generation. Gripen A and B were the first series in service with Sweden, designed to be lightweight, multi-role and low-cost. Later, Gripen C and D were born with upgraded electronics, improved radar, aerial refueling capability and Meteor missile compatibility, becoming the main export line.
The latest generation is Gripen E and F, also known as Gripen NG, which is a comprehensive redesign with AESA radar, more powerful engines, modern sensors and a large combat payload, enough to compete with leading generation four and a half fighters. In addition, Saab is also researching the Gripen Maritime variant for carrier operations and building the Gripen Demo prototype to test technologies for the NG generation.
