At the conference, 100% of the members of the Executive Committee of the Can Tho City Party Committee voted to approve the plan for rearranging administrative units at the commune level in the city, comprising 32 communes and wards (16 wards and 16 communes). Of these, four communes will retain their original area and population: Tan Loc ward (Thot Not district, as it is an isolated island on the Hau River), Truong Long commune (Phong Dien district), Thanh Phu commune, and Thoi Hung commune (Co Do district), as they meet the new criteria for area and population size.
Regarding the plan for reorganizing provincial-level administrative units, it was agreed to merge Can Tho City with Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces. After the reorganization, the (new) Can Tho City will have an area of 6,360 km2, a population of over 4.1 million people, and 103 administrative units, including 31 wards and 72 communes.
The political and administrative center is currently located in Can Tho.
Concluding the meeting, the Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee, Do Thanh Binh, emphasized the importance of communication and consensus building, and requested that each member of the City Party Committee thoroughly understand the Central and City's policies on the merger; if there are any questions or concerns, each person must take responsibility for explaining and providing information... in order to create the highest level of consensus within the political system and among all the people.
The Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee requested that, following this meeting and the Can Tho City People's Council meeting on April 25th, the Deputy Head of the Steering Committee and the Secretary of the Party Committee of the Can Tho City People's Committee direct the preparation of documents and procedures in accordance with the regulations of the Central Government and the Government to report to the Government as prescribed.
At the same time, each member of the City Party Committee's Executive Board will focus on the administrative unit reorganization while ensuring the work of their respective agencies and units; effectively addressing policies for officials affected by the reorganization, and doing a good job of stabilizing political and ideological affairs…
Previously, on April 22, the Legal Affairs Committee of the Can Tho City People's Council held a meeting to review the draft resolution and submission regarding the approval of the policy on rearranging administrative units in Soc Trang province, Hau Giang province, and Can Tho city.
The People's Committee of Can Tho City has submitted a summary report on the results of the voter consultation regarding the reorganization of administrative units in Soc Trang province, Hau Giang province, and Can Tho city, as well as the draft plan for the reorganization of Soc Trang province, Hau Giang province, and Can Tho city.
Accordingly, 97.22% of voters in Can Tho City approved the merger of Can Tho City, Hau Giang Province, and Soc Trang Province; 99.55% of voters in Hau Giang Province agreed, and 96.80% of voters in Soc Trang Province agreed to the merger.
