Burning lover because… agreeing to break up
The case was recently brought to trial by the Provincial People's Court on May 15th between the victim and the defendant who have completely opposite circumstances. The two used to be very close, but now they have become strangers.
The victim was a beautiful girl, in her prime, suddenly became disabled, her beauty ruined... The defendant is Nguyen Nhat Thien, prosecuted for murder.
According to the case file, Thien and the victim T., residing in Tan Phu Thanh commune, Chau Thanh A district, met each other on Facebook and then developed a romantic relationship. In early August 2023, Thien went to T.'s house to play and bought beer for the two to drink together.
After a while, because he couldn't drink, T. went to sleep, and Thien took T.'s phone to play a game. While playing the game, a friend of T.'s who was abroad texted him and Thien replied to the message. After that, Thien deleted all the messages, but the last message "good night" was not deleted yet.
When he woke up, T. discovered the message and asked Thien if he had texted his friend to borrow money or what for? They argued back and forth, then Thien told T. to open the door to go back to Soc Trang , otherwise he would burn down the house.
Hearing that, T. immediately opened the door and stood in the yard, while Thien gathered his clothes, put them in his backpack and said goodbye. When he received an affirmative answer from his girlfriend, Thien had the idea of burning T. with gasoline and then committing suicide.
Thinking and doing, Thien went into the house to get a bottle of water and then took gasoline out of his motorbike. Next, Thien poured gasoline on Ms. T. and himself and lit a match, causing Ms. T. to catch fire. Although she was taken to the emergency room in time, Ms. T. suffered severe burns, with injuries of 64%, and was unlikely to recover.

According to Judge Pham Hoang Lam, Deputy Chief Justice of the Provincial People's Court, the trial showed that in most murder cases, the defendants were young or teenagers. Some cases were due to hooliganism, momentary anger, and the inability to control emotions, leading to reckless and reckless crimes.
“Murder is an especially serious crime, with an especially dangerous nature and level; it directly infringes on the lives of others, so the punishment for this crime is very severe, with a sentence of up to death for general deterrence and prevention,” Judge Lam analyzed.
According to lawyer Ho Quoc Thanh, Provincial Bar Association, crimes against other people's health come from many causes. Many people, because they cannot control their emotions, in a fit of anger, act cruelly towards others, causing the victim to die or be seriously injured.
Lawyer Thanh advised that each person needs to control their emotions, avoid getting angry, losing their mind, and should resolve conflicts by giving in and talking to each other to avoid unfortunate murder cases. In addition, propaganda work, raising awareness of law enforcement, especially the consequences of murder, needs to be focused on and strengthened.
