To date, Ho Chi Minh City National University has invited a total of 28 visiting professors, all of whom are big names in international academia and experts from the world's leading businesses.
Officially working from the new school year
According to MSc. Tran Thi To Uyen, deputy head of the organization and personnel department of Ho Chi Minh City National University, after the advisory board of the Visiting Professor Program at Ho Chi Minh City National University approved the list of the first 16 professors and international experts meeting the program's standards (April 21), the director of Ho Chi Minh City National University immediately signed the appointment letter.
"All of these visiting professors have responded and are happy to receive the appointment letter, and said that they will soon plan to work with the schools under Ho Chi Minh City National University. Each visiting professor will have a general work plan for one year, so they are currently discussing with the member schools to reach an agreement, of which most will officially work from the next semester (September 2025).
In addition, some cases will work from now until the end of 2025, depending on the working plan with the schools. Currently, these visiting professors are in many different countries, so they may choose to work online or directly depending on the agreement with the school to pay the salary, but certainly all of them will have 10 days of direct work in Vietnam," Ms. To Uyen added.
According to Ms. To Uyen, 12 candidates who meet the requirements of the Visiting Professor Program (2nd batch in 2025) were just approved by the advisory council on May 17. In the next few days, the personnel organization board will also soon submit their appointment letters so that they can soon plan to work with the schools.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hoang Tu Anh - Principal of the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) - said that the first round of appointed visiting professors includes Associate Professor Dr. Dinh Ngoc Thach (National School of Arts and Crafts, France), an experienced expert in the fields of optimization theory, control, and applied mathematics who will work at the University of Information Technology.
"The school proactively invited this expert, so after the director of Ho Chi Minh City National University appointed him, we discussed and planned for the professor to start teaching from the next semester. The visiting professors will participate in teaching the English program and cooperate with the department's strong research group to carry out international research projects.
In addition to the general policies of Ho Chi Minh City National University, the school also provides additional support for visiting professors. In the near future, there will be a number of other professors from Japan, the US... visiting the school. We will try to make the best use of the cooperation between the two sides to promote scientific research at the school," Ms. Tu Anh shared.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thien Phuc - Vice Principal of the University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University), four international professors who have accepted to work at the school will also officially teach and research from September 2025.
Meanwhile, a representative of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) said that the school is in the process of signing contracts with five visiting professors who were appointed in the first round. The expected start date for these professors is from the beginning of the new school year, September 2025.
In particular, Professor Luong Van Hy regularly returns to Vietnam to teach and guide research in the university's anthropology department. The visiting professor program of Ho Chi Minh City National University is significant in formalizing this professor's long-standing collaborations at the university.
Work in person and online
Visiting professor is a position appointed by the director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, working on a part-time basis, performing teaching and research in person or online.
They are professors, associate professors, experts, scientists, and managers with outstanding achievements, working at universities, research institutes, international organizations, and technology corporations around the world.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Vu Hai Quan - Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University, each visiting professor must spend at least 10 days working directly at Ho Chi Minh City National University each year; with the consent of the agency or organization where he/she is working.
According to the appointment process of visiting professors at Ho Chi Minh City National University, member units of this university determine the need to invite visiting professors based on 4 contents: training; scientific research, innovation; domestic and international cooperation, community service; organizing conferences and seminars.
Visiting professors actively plan and participate in teaching directly or online; organize scientific conferences, co-supervise PhD students and support the development of international cooperation proposals as well as support the building of strong research groups.
In addition, visiting professors also participate in creative startup activities, supporting students and lecturers in developing highly practical startup ideas and projects.
"The visiting professors are expected to contribute, build and improve talent training programs; impart experience, update knowledge and the latest technology trends to students and postgraduates; propose, build and co-chair research programs, interdisciplinary research projects, and solve urgent challenges in Vietnam and the region," Mr. Quan emphasized.
Appointment minimum 1 year, maximum 5 years
According to Dr. Le Thi Anh Tram - Head of the Personnel Organization Department of Ho Chi Minh City National University, visiting professors will be appointed for a maximum of 5 years, a minimum of 1 year and can be extended.
