While traditional workouts require effort and dietary changes to build endurance, users now have an immediate solution: wearing Nike's new robotic shoes. Specifically, the sports giant has introduced Project Amplify , an early design for a motorized footwear system. The device is expected to increase speed, endurance and overall running performance. The Amplify system consists of an elastic band containing a battery, which is fixed to the user's calf. From here, a mechanical arm is directed downward, with the motor concentrated at the thickest point on the outside of the ankle. This motor then controls a hinge, which connects directly to the heel of the shoe. Photo: Nike. |

Even without the motor system, the shoe itself is still a good enough sports product for running and walking. The shoe integrates a carbon fiber plate and Nike's signature modern style. This feature allows the user to use the shoe independently, which is especially useful when the motor device needs to be recharged. Photo: Mrwhosetheboss/Nike. |

The core mechanism of Amplify is that the motor pulls the heel up at the end of each stride. The device is finely calibrated to synchronize the mechanical movement with the natural movement of the ankle and lower leg. This process creates an additional bounce, thereby increasing the propulsion and performance of the user's every step. Photo: Nike. |

Nike isn’t aiming Project Amplify at elite athletes or marathoners. Instead, the device is designed to support intermediate runners. The company claims Amplify provides the support needed to improve overall fitness or sustain longer runs. It’s also aimed at everyday walkers and those who stand for long periods of time, helping them maintain optimal mobility with maximum comfort. Photo: Mrwhosetheboss/Nike. |

Similar to other performance and accessibility devices such as exoskeletons for athletes or motorized braces for soldiers, Project Amplify focuses on enhancing the human body's natural abilities, rather than replacing skills acquired through training. The device will help users maintain activities at work, running or competing for longer than their biological abilities. Photo: Nike. |

Nike is pushing ahead with Project Amplify in partnership with Massachusetts robotics company Dephy, and is testing it at its innovation lab in Beaverton, Oregon. While the robotic shoe is still a few years away from commercialization, Nike has already announced several other groundbreaking products. Photo: Mrwhosetheboss/Nike. |

The most notable of these is the MIND shoe line, which uses neuroscience to help users achieve a state of calm and concentration. Along with the AERO-FIT high-performance clothing line, which has superior air cooling capabilities through a pump system and is produced entirely from chemically recycled textile waste. These products will soon be commercialized. Photo: Mrwhosetheboss/Nike. |
