To fully transform into the role, Sweeney had to gain 13 kg and train like a professional boxer for months. “We increased my daily intake, I drank a lot of protein shakes, smoothies and ate constantly – from peanut butter sandwiches, Smucker's to fast food. Maintaining the weight was harder than training,” she shared with Variety .
The 27-year-old actress revealed that she works out three times a day, combining strength training and high-intensity boxing. During filming, Sweeney even suffered a black eye while recreating the classic fight between Christy Martin and Laila Ali, daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali.
“The past few months, I’ve been living in Christy’s world – training like her, eating like her, thinking like her. It’s the story of an incredible woman, fighting both in and out of the ring,” Sweeney said.
Having wrestled and kicked-boxed from the ages of 12 to 19, Sydney Sweeney saw this as an opportunity to return to her old passions and challenge herself. “Christy Martin’s story is one of strength and determination, and it’s an honor to share her journey,” she said.
The film Christy - where Sweeney transforms into "boxing queen" Christy Martin - promises to be one of the turning points in her career, when this young actress proves that strength comes not only from muscles, but also from spirit and courage.
