Preserving and promoting traditional cultural values ​​of ethnic minorities

STO - Soc Trang is one of the localities in the Mekong Delta with many traditional cultural festivals formed from the cultural exchange of the Kinh, Khmer, and Chinese ethnic communities with their own identities. In recent years, the provincial Department of Culture has made many efforts to preserve and promote the fine traditional cultural values ​​of ethnic minorities, contributing to building an advanced Vietnamese culture with strong national identity.

In early 2025, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Soc Trang organized the handover of costumes, sound equipment, and traditional musical instruments to art clubs and provided financial support for teaching cultural heritage to artisans in the province. Accordingly, costumes, sound equipment, and musical instruments were handed over to the Art Club in Sa Bau hamlet, Thuan Hoa commune (Chau Thanh district), the Five-tone Club of Se Ray Cro Sang pagoda (Vinh Chau town), the Chhay Dam and Teng Mon Dance Clubs of Bang Cro Chap Thmay pagoda (Long Phu district) and the Khmer Mass Art Club of Cay Sop hamlet (Ke Sach district); at the same time, funding was awarded to 1 folk artisan and 4 outstanding artisans in the transmission and dissemination of traditional cultural activities and training, fostering, and teaching of successors. The total support budget this time is about 10 billion VND.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Soc Trang, the activity of receiving costumes, audio equipment, musical instruments and funding to support artisans of the Project "Preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural values ​​of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development" in Soc Trang province in 2024 belongs to the National Target Program on socio -economic development of ethnic minority areas in the period 2021 - 2030. This project has been implemented for 1 year and achieved positive results, contributing to the development of the art movement, preserving and promoting the traditional cultural and artistic values ​​of ethnic minorities.

The project has supported artisans, art clubs, organized training for 240 instructors and students at lion - unicorn - dragon clubs of districts, towns and cities in Soc Trang province; supported the restoration and performance of 20 water lanterns, 4 Ca Hau boats within the framework of the Ooc Om Boc Festival - Ngo Boat Racing with a total cost of more than 2 billion VND; built 3 traditional cultural models of ethnic minorities in Phu Tan commune, Chau Thanh district, including: a model to guide and practice the intangible cultural heritage of Rom Vong dance; a model to promote and introduce ethnic costumes for tourists to take souvenir photos and a model to guide and practice the Khmer people's flattened green rice flakes; Supported 16 Pentatonic sets, 1 set of traditional musical instruments, 10 sound systems, 442 costumes, accessories and instructions for building 3 performance programs for 30 traditional art troupes with a total budget of more than 6 billion VND.

The project also invested in building an exhibition house at the tourist destination of Som Rong Pagoda, renovating and embellishing the historical relic of Doi Pagoda, and renovating and repairing 53 cultural houses in extremely disadvantaged hamlets in ethnic minority areas. Over the past decades, the cultural and folk arts of ethnic minorities in Soc Trang province have been preserved, conserved and strongly promoted. Up to now, Soc Trang has had 8 intangible cultural heritages recognized and included in the list of intangible cultural heritages of humanity and the country, including: Southern amateur music, Nghinh Ong festival in Tran De district, Pia cake traditional craft of the Chinese people in Chau Thanh district, folk performing art of Ngu am music, Ro bam dance art, Rom vong dance art, Du ke art of the Khmer people, Ngo boat racing festival of the Khmer people.

To preserve and promote the value of heritages, Soc Trang has implemented many solutions such as: investing in the restoration and preservation of the art of du ke, ro bam, organizing costume contests of the three ethnic groups Kinh, Khmer, Hoa. Authorities at all levels always create favorable conditions for ethnic people to participate in traditional festivals such as: Chol Chnam Thmay, Sene Don Ta, Ooc Om Boc - Ngo Boat Racing Festival, Water Lantern Festival, Flower Offering Ceremony, Chinese Lantern Fighting Festival, Chroi Rum Chek Festival, Thak Con Festival, Nghinh Ong Festival...

In order to preserve and promote traditional cultural values, the provincial Department of Culture also conducts surveys, inventories, collects and documents the traditional cultural heritage of ethnic minorities. Currently, Soc Trang Provincial Museum has about 500 artifacts of traditional costumes of the Khmer and Chinese people through the periods; Soc Trang Provincial Khmer Cultural Exhibition Room has over 400 artifacts including manual agricultural tools, household items and the spiritual and cultural life of the Khmer ethnic people.

According to the leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Soc Trang, with the close and timely attention and direction of the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Committee and the coordination of specialized sectors, programs and project plans on preserving and promoting traditional cultural values ​​of ethnic minorities have been well implemented. In the process of integration and development, preserving and promoting traditional cultural and artistic values ​​of ethnic minority communities is necessary and important for ethnic minorities to nurture a diverse and rich spiritual life, cherish the preservation and promotion of their cultural identity. In addition, the support of cadres and people in ethnic minority areas contributes to the effective implementation of ethnic policies, and the material and spiritual life of ethnic minorities is constantly improving. Effective and meaningful solutions such as restoring and preserving festivals, investing in and supporting artisans and traditional art clubs, promoting and introducing unique cultural features of ethnic groups by the provincial Department of Culture have also contributed to the development of the tourism industry, creating achievements in the socio-economic development of the locality.
