The above information was shared by Mr. Le Quang Ha - Deputy Director of Viettel Cyber Security Company - at the Smart Banking 2025 Conference and Exhibition, an event organized by the Vietnam Banking Association in coordination with IEC Group, National Data Association, and National Cyber Security Association, taking place today, September 25, in Hanoi.
Banking data management remains challenging
In recent years, digital transformation in the Vietnamese banking industry has created important turning points, not only digitizing traditional transactions but also moving towards creating a comprehensive digital banking ecosystem.
Assessing this development, Major General Nguyen Ngoc Cuong - Director of the National Data Center ( Ministry of Public Security ) and Vice President of the National Data Association - said that data has gone from being a by-product to operating information technology systems to becoming a new strategic resource, an essential means of production, a core factor for national development.
In Vietnam, the banking industry has identified data as a strategic resource; many pioneering banks apply it to their services such as authenticating customers with chip-based ID cards, comparing with the national population database to clean up records, using big data information from telecommunications and social networks to score customer credit, etc., contributing to accessing and expanding many services for many subjects, effectively minimizing risks.

“However, exploiting and managing banking data still faces many challenges. Data quality from many different sources is sometimes duplicated, incorrect or not updated promptly; data in the banking and finance sector is not yet fully connected with tax and customs authorities, etc., thus creating a comprehensive picture to have data serving multiple purposes,” Major General Nguyen Ngoc Cuong affirmed.
AI applications are not as good as "doors" for hackers to break in
Mr. Le Quang Ha - Deputy Director of Viettel Cyber Security Company - assessed that digital transformation brings many changes to society but also comes with many risks.
For the financial and banking sector in particular, AI applications and data sharing are facing many challenges. Data is a special asset with a human nature, so it will be very difficult to protect. The more interconnected and connected it is, the higher the risk of information disclosure.
Statistics show that 40% of information leaks come from third parties and 11% come from fourth parties.
“Many financial institutions use AI to deliver customer experience, but if not done well, these tools will be the 'door' for hackers to break in. Cyber attacks are increasingly sophisticated, banks are attractive targets for hackers, especially for high-level hackers, leading to an imbalance in the balance of defense and attack.
Not stopping there, awareness of security culture is not high, employee awareness of customer protection is not high, there are even profiteering behaviors", Mr. Le Quang Ha analyzed.
Sharing the same view, Mr. Vu Ngoc Son - Head of NCA Technology Research Department - assessed that AI application is a very powerful weapon but comes with risks. How far AI is deployed and how data is controlled depends a lot on the initial design and quality of the AI service being used.
